From the distance of encanto, a red-headed girl with tight curls climbed over the last looming mountain asshe looked down into the bustling city.
She had heard a lot about this place from her grandmothers- friend's post-card. It was exactly as she pictured it small yet, full in a way. Sophia Certez had gladly accepted her invitation to move in with her after her parents unfortunately passed. She didn't take much with her, just her mother's pink dress and fathers red shoes, which she almost always wore, a couple other pairs of clothes, a locket, a bow, and a bandana. She left for Encanto around 12 days earlier and had finally just now, arrived. She was dead tired and dragged her feet to the foot of the town in hopes of finding this house to rest.
She furrowed her brows because she had no idea where the house was , all she had was a description. She started tapping people frantically, trying to signal to them to help her find the house, but it was to no prevail. People just gave her nasty looks since she couldn't speak.
For as long as she could remember, she could never speak. Her parents tried to teach her, but it was like her throat was clogged up. She tried speaking again and again but she just couldn't. She could never even make a noise like a whimper, or a yell. Instead she would have to use arm movements or tap someone on the shoulder to get their attention. She hated it. She had always wanted to speak.
Finally, she sat on the curb with tears poking her eyes. She was panicking, lost, scared, and no one took notice. No one cared. After all she couldn't make a whimper noise or a help noise, to most it seemed like she was resting. She wanted to scream out for help but nothing came out, so she just sat.
Just as she was about to give up and lay in the street she felt a small child tap her shoulder.
"Are you okay? These animals told me someone was in distress so, I went to go investigate." A small boy looking no older than 6 said with concern flooding his eyes. She gave a sad smile before she had an idea. She grabbed the post card and a price of charcoal and under the description of the house, she wrote:
'Can't speak, do you know where this house is?' She wrote showing the little boy. She suddenly doubted herself, could this kid even read?
"Hey toucan" he said signaling a toucan to come over
"Read this to me" the toucan cawed a few times and the boy nodded. The girl cocked her head in interest at the boy was he talking to animals or was she going crazy?
"Oh Abuela Alma told us you would be coming! I live there follow me!" He said smiling. A rush of relief washed over the girl. She rose and gave a small smile waiting for the boy. Suddenly a tiger jumped out of no where and sat by him.
"Hop on it will be quicker this way."
She reluctantly got on the tiger situating herself and then helped the boy on. This was the first time she could study him. He had thick black maybe dark brown, curls that framed his face. He was certainly a cute boy and she knew when he grew up, he would get a lot of attention.
Suddenly the tiger started running and snapped her back to reality as she hugged the tiger. At first she was scared but her fear dwindled away into relief and excitement as the wind tossed her curls. She looked to the side as they whipped passed the town a smile on her face. The town was pretty, unlike where she grew up. She admired it.
The ride of the tiger was to short for her, soon enough it stopped at this huge colorful house. She looked up at it her eyes wide. It was huge and beautiful! Aweinspiring.
"Come in Abuela is waiting." He said.
They hopped off and started for the house. Then something strange happened.
The house waved at her? What. As if in cue, it opened the doors right after he waved. What? So strange..
"Abuela I found the guest!" The boy shouted and suddenly 5 people came out from the shadows with a curious look on their faces. She didn't like the attention so, she spun on my heel and hid behind the door. A sweet voice filled my ears.
"Ah wonderful please bring her in." The voice said. The boy turned and motioned for her to come over. A drop of sweat fell on her forehead as She repeatedly shook my head.
"Come on do you wanna sleep outside?" He said and finally, she stepped towards him.
There had to be like 10 people standing and staring at her. She disliked that. She slouched over and nervously grabbed the boys hand. He glanced up at her and took the notion to pick up his pace as he sped walked over to his Abuela.
"Here Abuela!"
"Oh my! This must be the Sophia Zandra was talking about!" Sophia gave a slight nod and straightened up a bit.
"Oh that's right, your mute.. Well then welcome to the Madrigal's casita, it is a pleasure to have you. You are just in time for dinner!" She said with a warm smile. Sophia returned the gesture and let go of the boys hand as he raced off to inform his family about dinner.
"Come with us and sit, my name is Alma, I was a friend of your grandmother Zandra, when I heard of your parents passing, I thought you'd like another family to grow with. You are only 15, here sit." She said ushering her to a seat. She smiled and gave a respectful nod in response.
A few minutes later the entire family came in to dinner. Oh boy...
This was going to be a long... dinner.
