Earlier That Morning
ZOE'S POV
I don't understand people who don't like rain.
What's not to like?
Besides that sometimes it's a bit cold but a jumper can fix that!
I just love rain!
So when I woke up this morning and my mum told me it was going to rain, I bolted upstairs to my room to change my shorts for my jeans, and added a jumper to the pile of clothes that I would change into after my shower.
I haven't been able to wear my jeans in ages without: a) overheating, and b) getting weird looks from the not-so-normal people at school.
Who says I can't wear jeans on a hot day? Not me! That's for sure.
After showering and putting on minimal makeup, because I really can't be bothered today, I get dressed in my black jeans, one of my Lord of The Rings shirts, (long story short, I went on a holiday to New Zealand and went to Hobbiton. It's my favourite souvenir), and slipped on my favourite grey hoodie.
I chuck my hair in a high pony, shove my feet into my mint green vans and ran down stairs to have breakfast.
Today was going to be a good day.
After all, it's raining!
Although, the news I was greeted with when I entered my kitchen was going to make today worse than expected .

I knew something was up as soon as my mum asked me to sit down.
I shuffled towards the lounge room and sat down on the chocolate brown sofa.
Mental note: Sitting cross legged in jeans is not as easy as it looks.
My mum takes a seat next to me, so I turn towards her so I can look at her without cramping up my neck.
"Sweetie."
Dammit. Something is definitely wrong. The only time she ever called me sweetie before was when my goldfish died.
Granted, I was 6, but still. I loved Marty.
"I only found out last night about this, and you were already asleep..." She drew out the last few words, trying to put off whatever she had to tell me.
"Come on mum. If you want to tell me, just tell me." She was making me impatient, a quality I got from her as a matter of fact.
"Ok, your friend Heather," she said slowly, as if I would know what she was about to say.
But I went along with it,
"Yeah..?" I questioned, almost afraid of what would come next.
My mum took a deep breath.
"She was cancer free for almost a year, she went back for a checkup three days ago, on Saturday, the cancer was back..."
I was frozen in place. I couldn't move anything. I was paralysed, my mouth wide open, tears beginning to force their way into my eyes. I couldn't bring myself to speak.
She had been so happy when she'd beat the cancer.
Hell, we were all so happy.
Me, Tyler, Bree... Jade.
Heather had left the school to recover. She was in the hospital for the first month or so, then she went back home and had a tutor help her keep up with all the work she was required to know in order to pursue her dream of being a lawyer.
