The sound of running water was the only one present in the bathroom. Everyone else was in the gymnasium dancing and having fun, but Meg stood there running the cool water over her hands. Her reflection in the mirror stared back at her, boring brown eyes taking in all of the features she hated. Her hair lacked the luster of everyone else's. She wasn't pretty, not like the others with their beautiful smiles and perfect curves.
The opening door caught her attention, and Meg turned to see Roxanne Williams enter the bathroom. With her long, blonde hair and her dazzling blue eyes, Roxanne was one of the most beautiful people at Jefferson High School, if not the most beautiful. Her posse of Barbie doll look-alikes, Synthia and Mabel, followed her inside. The two were chattering incessantly, but when they saw Meg twin looks of annoyance appeared on their faces.
"Well look who it is." Roxanne's voice was like poison dripping down Meg's spine. She had never been nice. She was too pretty for that, or at least that's what everyone would say. "The first ever ugly prom queen nominee."
"Leave me alone, Roxanne," Meg said with a small sigh. She moved to try to leave the bathroom, but Synthia and Mabel moved in front of the door, effectively blocking her inside.
"Oh no, none of that. You know by now that when I speak you're supposed to listen." Roxanne's eyes narrowed, taking in Meg's dress and complexion while the other two snickered. "I can't believe you thought that tiny amount of makeup could make you pretty. Give up, Meg. You'll never be beautiful like the rest of us."
"Yeah, you'll never be like us," Synthia parroted.
"I don't care if I don't look like the rest of you." That was a lie. She wished more than anything that she could be pretty, even if it was just for one night - one night where no one would look at her and instantly judge her. All she wanted was one night.
"And I don't care if I become prom queen," Roxanne said sarcastically. Her self-assured smile changed into a smirk. "Everyone here knows that you want to be like the rest of us. That's why you're a nominee for prom queen. It's just another way to prove once and for all that you don't stand a chance. You don't belong on that stage, and you don't deserve that crown. The title of prom queen is only for the best of us. Now if you'll excuse me, I forgot what I even came in here for because of you. Let's go, ladies."
Roxanne and the others turned back around and walked out of the door, leaving her without a single glance back. Meg wanted to leave. Of course she had known that it was all just a joke for everyone's amusement, but suddenly it was much more real. Before it had been unsaid, and she could still pretend that people actually liked her. Now she couldn't ignore the truth of the matter.
Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes when she finally left the bathroom and entered the gymnasium. Though she wanted to, Meg wasn't going to let herself cry in front of these people. They wanted to humiliate her. She wasn't going to be the one to tell them that she felt humiliated.
"Excuse me, are you alright?"
Meg looked over at the person who had spoken. She recognized her to be Elise, the president and creator of the Jefferson High School's book club. Elise had curly black hair that fell in perfect ringlets around her face. Her jade green eyes were warm and friendly, framed by wire-rimmed glasses that complimented her features perfectly.
