I had no idea what Alastor had in mind. But whatever it was, I prayed to all that was unholy it would work. King Henry was getting angrier with each new bit of gossip that came out of every courtier's mouth. Apparently, it was well known that the King had a rival for my affections.
That evening, I sat playing cards with the King and a few gentlemen that constantly followed him around like little dogs. Naturally, King Henry had won every hand so far. None of us were stupid enough to let him lose even a single hand. Confident with his latest win, he gave me what passed for a charming smile and said, "Our wedding will be in three days. Be sure to wear red, I like that color best on you."
I gave him the happiest smile I could muster and resisted the urge to tell him I would prefer to wear black, "Of course, your majesty."
My stomach curled into knots. Three days was all we had to do away with this plan of King Henry's. Three days to save my immortal soul from becoming wife 144 and eventually just another footnote in the afterlife drama that was King Henry's court.
