This story has been in my head for months, deadly serious, months! It was more than time that I got it down on paper and for a first time writing in this Universe I think I've done ok? I hope...

You had really done it this time.

There would be no gentle slap on the wrists after this stunt, no way. True you hadn't risked any lives, no damage had been done to the Village, the people were still safe and happy in their blissful ignorance, but you had overstepped the mark, big time.

It had to have been discovered by now, a gnaw of guilt ate at your stomach, yet the smirk that graced your lips could not be denied. Could you laugh your way out of it, it was, after all, a practical joke? That seemed unlikely, you knew how closely guarded the Anbu were about their uniform and their masks.

Masks that were to protect identities, although there had been notable exceptions throughout the years. Everyone had seemed to know of Kakashi of the Sharingan, despite the fox mask that concealed his face from view, not that your sensei had ever minded that knowledge. Although the bright crimson eye was sure to be a giveaway in that particular instance.

Your own mask sat nestled safely in a drawer in your bedroom, unused in almost a year. Taking it out only brought pain, not the stab of a blade, more like a thousand tiny papercuts that shredded at your heart and brought forth the twisted rage that festered in your mind.

One accident, one mistake, and you were benched. Forced on to the sidelines under the disguise of recovery. It was fucking bullshit, and everyone knew it. You were more than strong enough to rejoin the ranks, a shadow in the night to be feared and yet they would not allow it.

It was them that you wanted to protect, every fibre of your being demanding that you seek out and eliminate any threat that would wish them harm, but no. It was unfair, a cruel punishment for a slip up that could not have been foreseen, not even with the fucking Rinnegan.

A quick peek around the curtains that were pulled shut, keeping prying eyes out of your home. The sun may have risen, the day begun, but you were not going to open these today, for fear of what you would be greeted with if you did.

Nothing seemed out of the ordinary, your home edged the central hub of the Village, allowing for peace when desired, but close enough to still feel a part of the hubbub. Konoha awoke to a beautiful spring day, the hustle of people beginning their day, and no one was aware of the fiendish prank that had been played.

It had taken weeks of preparation, information gathering from the people you considered your closest friends, and all the while you had imagined the looks on their faces when it was finally discovered. You could already see the deep scowls, the twist of lips turned down in displeasure, brows furrowed, and the tightening of such strong hands.

They deserved it; no one treated you like an invalid or incapable. You were just as strong as them, this they knew as you delighted in proving it time and again in your youth. A once Captain in the Anbu, you could have been so much more, but this was the life you had chosen, to protect them.
