The Rules That Bind Us

High school is a giant shit-hole and anybody who tries to tell you different is probably full of shit themselves. The select few that say they actually enjoy high school are either apart of the football team or are the ones on the sidelines in small miniskirts cheering them on. But for the rest of us, the other 97 percent , these four years will be a living hell.

I don't mean to sound so negative, but it's hard not to. You've got the egotistical teachers who think their class is the only one you're taking at the moment, the pimples that like to show up at the absolute worst times, the awkward transition between teen and adult, and then of course you've got the obvious sexual frustration from both genders that neither can seem to get a grip on.

I used to watch the typical high school movie chick flicks until I realized that that's all a bunch of shit too. There are no mysterious bad boys sitting in the back of the class waiting to insult your style and then take you out on a date and there most certainly are no unbelievably attractive jocks in your class asking for chemistry help, ready to get to know you and fall in love with your personality.

Have I had guys ask me out on dates? Of course, but does that mean I said yes. Absolutely not.

At this point, you all probably see me as a cold-hearted bitch, but I'm more than that. I'm a smart cold-hearted bitch. I don't get involved in the game of dating in high school. The only guys I find good looking are either taken, talking to someone, higher up on the social pyramid, or on the tree.

I guess while I'm on the subject, I should explain the system of the tree and it's purpose. So, to begin, picture a giant oak tree. The base of the tree, the structure, the foundation, the thing that everything grows off is the trunk. On here we have best friends and best friends only. Mine, for example, would be Emily and Maggie. I'll talk about them later, but for now let's move on.

Coming off of the trunk we have the main branches. These represent the friends of the best friends. These people are important, but not that important. They're the people you only talk to at school and usually only associate with when you have to. They tend to be annoying little fucks, but you put up with them anyway because you know your best friend will be pissed if you say something about them.

Finally, we have the twigs and the leaves. The twigs on the tree symbolize the people you see in the hallway, but never really talk to. You might give them a quick smile to be nice, but you know and they know that you aren't ever going to take it any farther. And the leaves on the tree are the complete strangers. You've seen them maybe once, if that, at school. You have no idea who they are, what their name is, or where they live.

And then of course we have the roots that are considered to be family members, but most people don't include the roots. You'll see once I explain a little more.

So, what is the point of the tree? The tree's main purpose is to serve every man and woman of all ages when it comes to judging if someone's ex is appropriate to date or not. When it comes to dating ex's, there are some unsaid rules. There are also many exceptions to those rules making the whole situation confusing, but the tree gives it to you straight. If the person your'e interested in is a friend of a leaf or a twig, figuratively of course, then that person is up for grabs. The main branches, or your bestfriend's friends, is where is usually gets tricky. The majority of the time, these people will fall under the category of a no-go. It's just safer that way.

I saved the best for last. The trunk, also known as the best friends, is the most important and sometimes the hardest to avoid. Friendships are wrecked and ruined because people don't follow the structure of the tree. Never should anyone ever, ever, ever date a best friend's ex. It's strictly forbidden in all countries.

But I'll admit, I've thought about it once, and only once. He's was just so cute, though.

Okay, this is something that I've had the idea to write for a while now and I'm really excited to finally get it out of my mind and in a hard copy. PLEASE tell me what you guys think so far because I probably won't write anymore if I don't think anybody likes it. I'll be switching back and forth between this story and Pretending to Love You. Thanks for reading!
