Inspired by the TV series Prehistoric Park, Dinosaur Reserve is an all-in-one simulation video game that mashes multiple different genres into one epic, immersive experience. The game becomes an open-world adventure game as you travel back in time and visit various different prehistoric ecosystems from the Mesozoic era where you explore the environment and document all the dinosaurs, pterosaurs, marine reptiles, and other creatures you encounter, along with being able to photograph and interact with the local wildlife in their natural habitat. but your primary objective while in the past is to capture and collect prehistoric animals using various different methods and bring them back to the present to populate your parks, both land and sea. Once you return to the present, the game becomes a Park builder in the vein of Prehistoric Kingdom and Jurassic World Evolution where you build enclosures for your prehistoric residents to call home along with guest facilities and attractions to make your park-goers happy.

You start off the game by customizing your own Avatar (can be male or female) which you will play as with different skin tone, hairstyle, and clothing options.

You are then transported into the worker village, an area not far from the park gate that serves as the game's central hub world where you are tasked by the park's CEO Norman McKenzie to capture prehistoric wildlife for his park
