SLEEPLESS NIGHTS

CHAPTER SEVEN

It burned. The agony was so much that she could barely feel anything else. The burning crawled on her skin like Anita's and bit her in small little bites. It pained her so deeply that she was screaming, howling in pain. Her screams are muffled by the gag that has been placed over her mouth. Her skin feels like it is on fire. Never has she ever felt pain like this. Whatever had been injected into her body is crawling through her veins. She wishes for death each time that her heart beats for the pain is so bad.

Forever it seems that the agony is within her. Never leaving her alone. The pain so bad that she wants nothing more than to end it all. Each time that she breathes, it becomes worse and worse and she can almost not take any of it any longer. It is so deep inside her that it is inside her veins and her bones even. It burns her. A chemical burning through her body like fire. Burning her from the inside out. Wanting nothing more than to destroy everything that she is. Letting out a scream, the door opens...

Her eyes had opened and she was inside a room that she knew all too well. The fear rose within her as she tried to sit up. As she was lying down on a bed. When she finds that she cannot sit nor move her body, the panic grows even more. Then she hears a voice speaks. A voice that she knows and yet did not expect to hear, especially there. "Please, she's my best friend. I need to see her" Lucien's voice begs with so much sorrow in his voice that it is even painful for her to listen to it.

Then her eyes see him and she looks at his body and his eyes. His eyes are so red and swollen like he has been crying. She feels him take her hand and hold her as he looks at her. "What's wrong with her?" Lucien asks. He's worried about her and concern for her that it makes her heart beat faster inside her chest. For a good reason. Karina does not know why he would want to visit her in hell but he is there and perhaps it can become heaven if only he is there with her.

She can't hear what the doctor in the room had said to him because she was so focused on Lucien and looking at him. Because, she knows this is for the last time that she will ever see him. She wants to enjoy this moment because after he is gone, the pain will return and she knows that she will never be able to escape it. Lucien takes all her pain away. Karina notices that the doctor leaves and they are just the two of them in the room. He sits there and holds her hand, his eyes never leaving hers.

The longer that he looks at her, the more she wishes she could always keep his gaze on her. Because with his eyes, she feels like the world is going to be all right and there is nothing that frightens her. There is something about it that always makes her want to look into his eyes and have his eyes look into hers. The contact is what makes her heart pound faster for the best reason in the world and her body reacts somehow without her knowing how or even why that happens. It shocks her and yet excites her as well.

"I should have been there for you. I could have prevented this from happening. I didn't want any of this to happen. My life is messed up, Karina. First my mother and now you. I'm a poison to everyone that I'm around" He speaks softly as he looks at her. More than anything, she wanted to rest her hand on his shoulder and tell him that it is not his fault. But, she can't move her body. She knows why. Karina wanted to move now because he needed her. As much as she needs him, he needs her.

He sighs. "I saw you get taken here and I got so scared. I thought you had jumped into the lake. I did everything that I could to find out what happened to you. They won't give me a clear answer. Only that you're in this petrified state of some sort where only your eyes can move. They said you can hear what is going on around you and I hope that you can hear me now when I spoke to you. I wouldn't want to feel like a jerk talking to you and you can't even hear me" He says and smiles a bit.
