"Nonna!" Seth exclaimed.
He took off running for the front seat. He left her granddaughter to sit in the back seat.
In the back seat in between Jayden and Emi. I'm sitting in between my best friend and the boy I've been pining over my entire life.
"Thank you for picking us up, Nonna. Where's mom?"
"She's relaxing in bed. Any excuse to see i miei nipoti, after they damaged their teenage livers with the consumption of disgustingly sugar coated alcohol," Nonna said.
"Nonna, please know that I didn't drink any alcohol tonight. I plan to live a long and healthy life without the consumption of depressants," Seth pleaded.
Nonna reached over and cradled his chin in her hands. He smiled like a little boy at my grandmother.
I leaned over to whisper to Emi, "Why does Seth kiss-up to Nonna?"
"Nonna loves him," Emi whispered. "It's not fair. I'm better than Seth, and yet Nonna treats him like the golden child that could do no wrong!"
Nonna went to drop off Emi and Jayden first.
I don't know if it was in my head, but I could swear that Jayden lightly squeezed my hand before leaving the car. Emi hugged me like she always did.
I could've been imagining that hand touching. It easily could've been something simple. My insane mind that's obsessed with Jayden is going to believe it. My insane mind needs to believe that it's true.
Seth, Nonna, and I drove to his house in a comfortable silence. Seth didn't try kissing up to Nonna for the first time, and the sweet sound of his silence was legendary.
I love Seth, I really do. However, I'm tired.
When we pulled up to Seth's house, all the lights were off. His dad's pickup truck was in the driveway, and it looks like it hasn't been driven in a long time. Seth and his father never got along growing up, but it's been years since his mother passed away. He and his dad probably haven't gotten along in all these years.
Some things never change.
Maybe that's why Seth clings to Nonna. I'm glad he has had Nonna and the Russo's in his life.
Seth is the sweetest soul around. It pains me to know that his father isn't waiting up for him to get home on a Friday night. I doubt he even went to Seth's game tonight.
"So, Diana, wanna get lunch with me off campus one day this week? The two of us haven't had time together since you got back."
"Sure!" I exclaimed.
"Great! I can't wait. Thanks for the ride, Nonna," Seth said.
Seth didn't even make it to his front door before Nonna started rattling the cage. The cage meaning, my personal life. I switched to the front seat, and Nonna started squealing like a child.
