"How much longer?" Amy asked, sounding tired.
"Almost there so calm down," Sydny replied with a giggle. They were about ten minutes from the house. Ten minutes from a happy new life. Amy couldn't keep her excitement contained. Maybe she could make new friends or even own a pet. Now that would be awesome. Sydny would never let Amy own a pet in that small house. But at the same time Sydny could never get over the loss of her old pet cat, Bandit.
Maybe things will be different, Amy thought. Maybe her mother will be understanding and let her get a pet so Amy has a friend to get her through the bad days. And who knows, maybe it could be trained to be helpful. Maybe then Amy could keep a pet.
"We're here!" Sydny exclaimed.
"For real! We're here!" Amy ran out of the truck and took a look at the house. It was beautiful. A two story light blue house. It was a bit dirty but Amy didn't seem to mind.
Amy was looking up and down at the house for a bit. But that's when she spotted it. A cute, fluffy little creature with a sharp tooth sticking out on both sides of its mouth. Actually it looked a lot like the one from earlier without the sharp teeth. What were they called again? Its a fennec fox! Amy remembered. Amy didn't hesitate. She went up to the fox and picked it up and it made a small yip sound. It was the cutest thing Amy had every heard.
"Mom look!" Amy yelled over to her mother.
"What is it? I'm a bit busy he-. What is that!"
"Its a fennec fox. You know, like the one from earlier."
"How many of them live here? Well we can't keep it."
"But mom!"
"But nothing. You can't have it. And besides, you don't know how to take care of one of these things."
"Well then I'll learn. Please mom can I keep her?"
"Well-." Amy gave her puppy dog eyes that never seemed to fail her.
"Wha-. Fine. But first how do you know that its a she?"
"I don't know it just looks like it."
"Amy you have to look first. Now can you please help. I don't want to be the only one to put the new house together." Amy put down the fox and started to help. But soon after the fox bolted toward the house and disappeared in a little hole in the wall. Well guess we are gonna have to fix that, Amy thought as she stared at the hole.
Amy felt a yawn as she set a box down by the door. She looked at the sky and realized that it had gotten late. Amy looked at her watch. 6:28. It didn't even feel like that much time had passed. It was around 9:32 when they left wasn't it? But then there was all the restroom, snack, and drink, and refueling stops.
"Guess we'll have to start putting stuff away tomorrow. Let's at least get the boxes and stuff in the house," Sydny said as she pulled a big box out of the moving truck.
"Alright," Amy said with a yawn. It had been a bit of a long day with moving, being attacked, and Angel the fox. Angel, Amy thought with a sigh. She had been the cutest thing Amy had ever seen until she got to this new house. As a matter of fact that fox looked smaller and a lot like Angel. No they can't be related, Amy thought sternly. There is no way Angel had traveled all the way to New York from here. Unless...
"Hey mom, I'm gonna go check out the house."
"Well first help me out a bit please."
"Okay." Amy needed to know for sure that this little fox was the offspring of Angel. If that were true then Amy would have a little piece of the fox that had saved her life. The fox that had the biggest, most beautiful blue eyes ever. The fox that may die soon. Those words repeated themselves in Amy's head for a long time. She just couldn't take her mind off of the fact that that fox was going to die and there was nothing she could do about it. They were already hours away from New York.
YIP!
"What was that?" Sydny asked, nearly dropping the box she had in her hands.
"I don't know. I'm gonna go check it out."
"No you're not! You stay here."
"But mom I'll be okay." Sydny hesitated. She couldn't stop Amy anyway. Once her mind was set then that's it.
"Fine. Just be careful please."
"I will." Amy slowly started walking to the side of the house where the yip had come from, but stopped at the corner. What if my new fox friend had gotten into trouble and got hurt. Or worse... Amy's stomach churned. She didn't want the fox she just met to be dead. If the fox is hurt then at least she could be saved. Hurt is better than dead I guess. She only hoped the fox was okay. Amy didn't know if she could live with herself if she let that poor little fox get hurt.
Amy took in a breath, closed her eyes, and turned the corner. When Amy finally opened her eyes she was terrified. There on the ground, curled up was a little furry ball. Its breathing was shallow and its leg looked broken. Amy had to get a closer look. She didn't want to know but had to find out. Amy got a bit closer and saw, there on the ground lie her new fox friend.
