Chapter 1 Dark Beginnings
I was pretty much considered a shadow at home and at school. Now looking back that word would have more meaning than I would ever know. My older sister was the star. Captain of the cheerleading squad, student council etc. You name it she was probably part of it. My father was a businessman. He could sell a ketchup popsicle to woman wearing white gloves. Or at least that's what my grandmother would always say. My mom was your typical housewife and an Avon rep. She was always helping out at all the public events.
"The hometown sweetheart" is what they called her. Then there was me. There wasn't anything really special about me, there never was. But yet when I went missing all of a sudden, the whole town cared. The sheriff was at my house every day the whole 3 weeks I was gone. They dated through high school. I don't think ever really stopped. I know that my family loved me, but I'm sure they would have rather been told I had been found dead in a ditch than finding out I was found walking down an old county road covered in blood and dragging a human spine with the head still attached. At the time I couldn't remember how I got there. At first, I only remembered a deputy pointing a gun at me and telling me to put my hands in the air.
All I remembered was walking home from my best friend's house when I noticed a van creeping up on me. I thought nothing of it at the time being from a small-town people would drive past and stare all the time. Next thing I knew a couple of people hoped out and grabbed me before I had a chance to even process what was going on. They then took me to some abandoned mansion out in the woods and locked me in a wooden box with a metal cage around it. It felt like months but in reality, it was only a few weeks. I was given stail bread and luke warm water. It was enough to keep me alive but it kept me weak so I couldn't fight back.
I realized there were other people in the other boxes. We could hear each other. One was a girl that sounded around my age, a middled age sounding man another guy that sounding like your typical jock. I never heard any of them say their names. After a few weeks they took the middle-aged man upstairs. After only a few minutes we began to hear him scream at the top of his lungs. Screaming "NO PLEASE STOP!!!!!"
The girl and I were brought up next. After that it was a blur. My therapist said my mind blocked it all out because of the carnage I had witnessed. It wasn't until the day of my court hearing that we found out the head I was dragging was the jocks head. Apparently, we had all been kidnapped by some kind of cult that was looking to summon a demon out of an old book they had found. The asshole prosecutor was convinced I was part of this cult and that I had a hand in everything. I remember him calling me to the stand and slapping the crime scene photos down in front of me while calling me a murderer.
That's when I began to remember. I was strapped to chair facing the girl across the room in the same kind of restraints. She sat there staring at me as she cried. What was left of the man they had taken up earlier laid in floor between us. They came after her next. I closed my eyes as tight as I could as I heard her blood curdling screams. They only lasted a few minutes. While this was going on the jock had apparently broken out of his box and made a run for it. The only way out was through the room we were in. He didn't even try to hide or anything. I guess he was that scared. When they all took off after him, they knocked my chair over and the pedestal that was holding the book they were reading aloud from.
I began begging for anyone or anything to get me out of this madness. "PLEASE I'LL DO ANYTHING!!!" I screamed in my head. That's when I saw him for the first time. He came walking out of the shadow on the wall and squatted down in front of me. He looked like a 1950's greaser. With the black t-shirt, blue jeans rolled up at the ends, black Chuck Taylor's and strange tattoos on his arms. His voice sounded strange when he began to speak. Almost as if there was a whisper repeating everything he said.
