“Melissa? Melissa, wake up!” I nudged her with my elbow.

“Yes? What, Violet?” She mumbled, half-asleep.

“Someone keeps knocking on the door downstairs.” I whimpered, my hands shaking.

She jolted out of my bed. She had fear plastered across her face. What was Melissa so worried about? She was fearless. My big sister could climb all the way up the big oak tree in our backyard. She wasn’t afraid when mummy yelled at her or when her mean teacher, Mrs White, sent her to the principal’s office. So what was making her face so pale right now?

“Violet?” Melissa said, slowly.

“Yes?” I whispered, clutching at her pyjama’s sleeve.

“I want you to hide in my wardrobe, ok? Don’t make any noise or move at all. And don’t come out until I tell you to.” She ordered, her voice firm but loving.

“Ok. But where will you hide?” I asked, looking into her brave brown eyes.

“I can’t hide, Violet. I have to face my fears.” She murmured, her eyes filling with unshed tears.

I felt tears threatening to spill over in my eyes too but I blinked hard. If Mel didn’t cry, I didn’t either.

“Go into the wardrobe now. And remember, don’t come out until I tell you to.” She warned, pushing me gently.

I nodded obediently. If I was a good girl, maybe Mel would come back soon. I crawled into the big wardrobe warily and snuggled between the big fur coats and silk robes Mel got from her trip to Japan. She came closer and bent down, until she was at my level. Melissa cupped my face in her hands and whispered,

“I love you, little sis.”

Those were the last words I heard from my big sister before she closed the closet door.
