As soon as we were in the Nursery, I said, "As much as I hate to admit it, I don't think there will be anything to investigate while we are here. But, if any of you do happen to find anything suspicious report it back to the rest of us and we will begin detecting right away." The others nodded in agreement. "I got an idea," said George. "How about if there is anything to investigate, we make it a challenge. The Detective Society versus The Junior Pinkertons. A bit like what we did in Cambridge."I have to admit, that was a good idea. "Fine, but just know we will beat you like we did before." I replied. "As if." retorted George. Ha! He actually thinks they will beat us! At that moment, we heard a loud noise come from downstairs.
"Did you guys hear that?" Alexander asked. "Of course we heard that! Now come on, let's go see what it was." I said. We all headed towards the door. It sounded like it came from the kitchens, so that might mean it was just Hetty or Mrs Doherty dropping something. And, I was right.
Once we were in the kitchen, we saw baking trays all over the floor. "Oh, hello Miss Daisy, welcome back." Mrs Doherty said. "What happened? Are you alright?" I asked. "Oh yes I'm fine. I just dropped a few trays. Have any of you seen Hetty? I haven't saw her all afternoon." Mrs Doherty replied. I looked at Hazel and it was clear she was thinking the same thing. Where was Hetty? "No, none of us have saw her." Hazel said. "Oh, that's OK she's probably just went home early and I haven't noticed. Have fun." But something about that didn't sit right with me. Hetty wouldn't do leave without telling Mrs Doherty. "OK, goodbye Mrs Doherty." I said as we were leaving.
"George, Alexander, did you happen to see anyone come out of the house when you came?" I asked them immediately. "No, I don't think so. Did you see anyone?" Alexander said turning to George. "Not that you would've saw much staring at that letter, but I don't think I saw anyone either." George replied with a smirk on his face. "What letter?" I said curiously. "Oh, uh, just a letter from my parents." Alexander replied. From the red on his face, it was obviously not a letter from his parents. Probably a letter from Hazel. I just wish they would realize that they liked each other so we could continue with our detecting without them acting all lovesick. Love always gets in the way of stuff. It's useless and I hate it. I will never fall in love. Never.
"What if Hetty really did just go home before we came here?" Hazel said, breaking the silence. "It's unlikely she would leave without telling anyone." I said. "Well, let's ask your aunt and uncle. She might've told them." Alexander said. "Fine. We'll ask them now. But if they don't know where Hetty is, we will start investigating." I said. And so, we went off to find Uncle Felix and Aunt Lucy.
