You're Hired!

"Blair, please don't do this! You're throwing away all your potential!"

I felt my eyes roll as I tried to stay patient and not hang up on my 78-year old grandmother.

"I apologize if I sound rude, but you're being dramatic. The job is only temporary till I find a better one with a salary and 401k. You know all the works." I said trying to get my point across.

"I just don't understand why you couldn't find a job like that. You've been searching for over a year."

Preach to the choir.

"Maybe because the job market is terrible right now and no one wants to hire anybody. I don't even know if I got the job yet and you're already screaming that my life is ruined."

I was already frustrated with my situation. I didn't need my grandmother to add to the already high levels of stress that I was somehow coping with.

"I'm just worried. First, you move out of the house, and now you're working some minimum wage job. People with college degrees aren't meant to work minimum wage jobs!"

Someone tell the job market that. Hey, I have a degree! Hire me!

I didn't want to sound disrespectful but Grandma was getting on my last nerves. I literally felt like I wasted four years of my life at some fancy university and after all that work I could even find a job. You would think that computer science would be an interesting major and would get me a job, but you would be wrong.

Suddenly my phone started beeping, letting me know someone else was trying to call me. Thank the universe for small blessings.

"Hey Grandma, I'm going to have to cut our call short. Someone else is trying to call me and I'm hoping it's the place I applied for." I said wrapping up our conversation

"Okay, Blair. I love you." She sighed and I was thankful she didn't put up a bigger fight.

"Love you too," I said before hanging up. With that call over I quickly answered the incoming call. "Hello?"

"Hello? Hello, hello? Is this Blair?"

"Yes, this is she," I answered.

"Hi, I'm Tyler calling from Freddy Fazbear's Mega Pizzaplex. I understand that you applied and interviewed for a position on our team?"

"Yes, umm... I was a little confused about the application I filled out. It wasn't very specific on what job I would be applying for and the person who interviewed me on the phone wasn't very helpful either. If I'm being honest the questions I was asked seemed super random and all over the place."

Like what job asks you for your favorite color? Like I get the job is at a kids' entertainment facility, but I don't understand why they would need to know that.

"Oh sorry to hear about that. Hopefully, I can shed some light on the situation. Here at Freddy Fazbear's Mega Pizzaplex, we want to make sure that the right people get the right jobs. The application you filled out and that interview were all meant to gain more info on you so we could find a role that we think would best suit you. Are you tracking with me so far?"

"Yeah, I think so," I responded still a little confused.

"Maybe an example would help. One of the questions asked if you liked sports. Now if someone didn't like sports, we wouldn't want to place them in a role at Monty's Gator Golf or Bonnie Bowl."

"Oh, I think I get what you're saying now. But why not just say that in the beginning." I asked.

"Well, some people who are looking for a particular role, but that may not be the job they would fit in. The questions we ask are designed to seem totally random so we can gain a fair assessment of the individual."

"Okay? What did my assessment say about me? I'm assuming since we're still talking that I'm being offered a job?" I cringed slightly hoping I  wasn't coming off too strong.

Tyler laughed. "Right you are. I just have a few follow-up questions before I reveal your role."

"Yeah, no problem. Ask away." I told him.

"Great! Now the questions I want ask, involve some things that I read on your resume."

Okay?

"Now it says that you graduated college with a degree in computer science with a minor in theatre. Now, what made you choose that combination?"

"I've always loved theatrical arts and I thought that maybe one day that I would be able to develop a program or a piece of software that could revolutionize entertainment," I said as I've rehearsed.

Bam! That's how you answer a fucking question like that!

If I was being honest with myself. I decided to minor in theatre because I loved singing and acting and a part of me could see myself on Broadway singing and acting in Phantom of the Opera or Wicked. But that's not what jobs want to hear. What they want to hear is how you're excited to work for their company and that you're going to be with them for a long time.

Pfff, Like I seriously want to work at Freddy Fazbear's Pizzaplex for the rest of my life.

"That's something we'd definitely like to hear.  Now it also says that you used to be a camp counselor. Can you tell me the age range of kids that you looked after?" Tyler asked.

I pressed my fist over my mouth to suppress the groan that wanted to escape. I spent four summers as an overnight summer camp counselor and I'm pretty sure I have some form of PTSD. It wasn't all bad, but I will seriously lose it if I have to deal with glitter again.

"Sure, I have experience with a bunch of age groups. The summer camp I used to work at was from ages seven to sixteen and we had different programs that would stimulate each age group. I worked with all the groups and-"

"I think that's all I need to hear," Tyler said before I could say anything else. Okay? Rude?

"Now, your experience and knowledge would be greatly beneficial to our team, but our problem is that there are two roles that we think you'd be perfect for."

Cool, so this means I at least have a job.

"And since we don't want to waste any of your potential, we kinda made a hybrid of the two jobs. Now before you say anything this job will require more commitment than our usual roles, but we are completely prepared to compensate you for this hybrid role."

"What do you want me to do?" I asked. They must really want me if they're willing to pay me extra.

"We would like you to be one of our new daycare attendants at Superstar Daycare!

A daycare attendant?

"Now, we already have a daycare attendant. He's one of our animatronics, but we would like you to assist him in taking care of the kiddos."

"Okay?... Umm is that all? You said this was going to be some hybrid job." I asked.

"You're a great listener! We definitely need that. You're correct, on top of being a daycare attendant, we also want you to be one of our animatronic handlers. More specifically the handler to the animatronic you'll be working with at the daycare. He acts a little wonky sometimes so we would love someone to check on his software and his coding, so he's ready for guests."

Surprisingly this wasn't the worst thing they could stick me with. I was certain they were going to stick me in one the restaurants, but actually utilizing my major. Letting me run diagnostics on a piece of machine wasn't what I was expecting. How could I possibly turn this job down. They were already going to pay me extra and I'm gaining experience in coding and software work.

"So what do you say?" Tyler asked after I was silent for a for a few moments. "You ready to start a career at Freddy Fazbear's Mega Pizzaplex?"

"... When do I start?"
