I sign the second-to-last piece of paperwork and smile. There was just one more document before Omerettá and I officially became a family.

"Alright Rettá, there's just one more page we need to find and fill out."

"Then we can go turn it in?"

"Yep and it will be official!"

Her face lights up in excitement, making me smile. I love seeing her happy...

As we lay together on the couch and I flip through the papers, the doorbell rings. "Hey, can you keep looking for the last page babygirl? I gotta get the door."

"Yea, sure." She gets up from the couch and picks up where I left off.

I go to the door and my smile disappears as I open it seeing Keri. She looked irritated at first as if she's ready to snap but once she looks me in my eyes her whole body froze. Keri begins to open her mouth but nothing comes out while she studies me. It was like she forgot why she was even here.

She finally gets herself together and asks, "Where is Amaria?"

"She doesn't want to see you, so I think it's best for you to just leave."

There was something off by the way she looked at me; it was like she knew me for some reason. She probably recognized me from the grocery store but there was something else I couldn't quite place by the way she looked at me.

"I need to see and talk to her. Where is she," Keri asks before attempting to walk past me in.

I step in front of her asking, "Who the hell do you think you are, trying to barge in my home? And you really want to talk to her after what you did? She was in shambles after she put her trust in you and you took advantage of her."

"Look, I know I was wrong that's why I'm here to try again."

"You can't just apologize and think it's going to fix everything!"

"Oh please, if you could apologize for putting hands on her, what makes you think she won't forgive me too?"

I start to respond but I hear Omerettà ask from the living room, "Mom, you alright in there?"

"I'm fine, baby. Just...stay in the living room."

"Mom? What kind of sick brainwashing did you do to her?! Amaria!" she yells out.

Omerettá comes in the room, looking at both of us with confusion.

"What's going on?"

Keri's voice and face softens as she says, "Amaria, baby, c-"

"Do not call me that. Why are you here?"

"I just want to talk. Can we speak privately," Keri asks before glancing over at me.

"No. Whatever you have to say you can say right here."

Keri sighs and states, "I want to apologize for what I did. I was only thinking about myself and took you for granted. These past few days, I truly enjoyed getting to know you Amaria. And I know there's so much more about you that I want to know."

She then takes ahold of Omeretta's hand. "Can you give me another chance Mari?"

Omerettà glances over at me as I look back at her, feeling a bit fearful, wondering if she would forgive her.
