Aiden took my hand and gently guided me beside him. Nyra stood in front of us with her eyes closed. Her eyebrows were scrunched up in concentration and her hands were held out palms up.
"You look beautiful," Aiden whispered to me.
I looked away from Nyra and at Aiden. A blush started to burn my cheeks as I muttered back, "Thank you."
I stared into his stormy eyes and he looked into my bright blue ones. My blush seemed to burn even hotter the longer I stared at him. Him... my soon-to-be husband, very soon.
"Are you ready, Heathen?" Nyra asked me with a glint of happiness in her eyes. I nodded and she turned to Aiden, "And you, pharaoh?"
"I'm ready," he answered.
She nodded and continued, "Then let's begin."
"Wait!" I exclaimed, "Don't we need a witness or something?"
Aiden placed a hand on my shoulder then said, "We don't need one. One of Nyra's powers is when she blesses a union all mortals and immortals know that they are united. She helped quite a few slaves back in the day with that power."
"Oh... okay. Precede then," I mumbled.
Nyra placed one of her hands on each of our heads then asked, "Do you agree to be united as companions in this life and the life under the watchful eye of Osiris?"
"I do," Aiden agreed.
They both looked at me and I whispered out, "I agree."
Nyra pushed down on our heads harder then she closed her eyes as a red light started to emit from her body. That light enveloped Aiden and me as Nyra muttered in a quiet yet powerful voice, "In your hand eternity holds, past where the universe folds. Without the world's hateful wrath, eternal and true is our path. No burden is the past, for you are my first and last."
The red light shrunk until it disappeared. Once the light was gone Nyra let her hands drop and she looked exhausted. A few beads of sweat gathered on her forehead and she said to me, "Congratulations, Alison. You're not only married to an amazing man but you're now the great royal wife. A leader of our beautiful Eygpt."
"A beautiful leader for beautiful Eygpt," Aiden told me.
I blushed again then replied, "That is very kind, and speaking of beautiful, Nyra, that poem you recited just now was beautiful. It was truly lovely."
They looked at me with big eyes and seemed stunned. Did I say something wrong? Did I offend them somehow?
Aiden got a look of determination on his face then he opened his mouth to say something, but just as he did the entire palace trembled. His head snapped to the roof and he whispered, "The rebels... they're here. I need to get outside. I have to protect our people."
The palace shook again and a piece of the ceiling fell and shattered on the floor in front of the doorway. A small scream escaped my mouth and I jumped. "We all need to get out. I think the palace is going down," Nyra exclaimed.
More pieces from the roof fell and Aiden yanked me out of the way as those pieces of debris landed right where I was standing. "We're gonna die!" I panted.
"No we're not," he promised me.
Flashes from when home was under attack flooded my mind. The shaking... the rubble... the distant screams. All that's missing is the flashing red lights.
"Princess!" a young girl's voice yelled.
We turned towards it and saw that in the corner of the room was a teenage girl and three men by an enormous hole in the wall. "The old slave tunnels," Nyra exclaimed in relief.
