“But you love me, don’t you?” I ask. I can barely hear myself over the sound of the raindrops hitting the roof of the porch. He doesn’t answer my question. He just lowers his head and looks at the ground to avoid eye contact. “Don’t you?” I place two fingers under his chin and force him to look up at me. We stare at each other in complete silence for at least thirty seconds before he wrap his arms around my neck and slam his lips onto mine.
“I do love you.” He whispers.
“It’s freezing out here.” I state. “How about we go inside?”
“I would love that.” I take his hand in mine and lead him back into the house.
Our home.

That was the day I got Joey back. Well…at least when I thought I got Joey back. What I thought was the best day of my life turned out to be the actually worse day of my life. That’s when I realized that Joey would not always be mine. He’s his own person and he makes his own choices. If he chooses to be with me, that’s up to him. Just knowing that Joey willingly chose not to love me crushed my heart worse than the day we broke up.
Is that memory anywhere in here? It should be on the same branch as Joey’s broken glasses since this memory happened immediately after we made up. Maybe it’s Joey’s phone dangling off of the end of this skinny branch…
“Don’t you just love the rain?” Joey asks me, sitting on the counter with his back against the wall.
“No. It just makes you cold and wet. What’s to love about it?”
“Everything.” He breathes out, staring out the window in awe. Is he high? He sounds high. He might be high. “The way it blocks out the silent screams of the ones secretly suffering in pain. The way it washes away the impurities of the world just for a new batch of shit to pile right back on top. The way it distracts you with it’s beautiful raindrops, taking you away from this bullshit we call life for just a few moments. That’s all we need. We want more. We want the distraction to last forever, but that’s not how it works. That’s not how life works. But death? That’s another story. The only thing you can do when it’s raining is let it rain.”
"Are you okay, Jay?”
“No.” he says, shaking his head. “I’m not okay, but I’ll be fine for now.” Before I can even get another word out, he hops off the counter and exits the kitchen, staring down at his phone. “I’ll be right back. I have to go handle some business real quick.” He tosses his phone on the couch and leaves the house and into the pouring rain.
What the hell is going on with that boy?
I peek my head out the window to find a drenching wet Joey Graceffa walking towards a yellow sports car parked in front of the house at the slowest rate possible.
What text was so urgent that he had to go out in that heavy storm for?
I grab his phone off the couch and go to his most recent messages. Wait. What the f*ck?
Sawyer: Heyy
Joey: Haii
Sawyer: So are you coming over today for a hit?
Joey: do you have the good stuff or the good stuff?
Sawyer: My girlfriend is over today so I don’t think we can do anything right now.
