Chapter 2- The New Town
“Well here we are, this is your new home.” Olivia smiled as she opened the door to her duplex in the suburbs of Kitchener. It wasn’t as city like Waterloo was but it was still a pretty decent for a foreign place.
I walked in and sure enough this was one of those houses that always looked so fancy and uncomfortable, definitely catalogue worthy. I sure hoped my room wouldn’t be as antique looking as the rest of this place. Whatever Olivia did for a living it was enough to afford this decent sized place.
“Let me show you around, the sitting room, dinning room, kitchen and the lounge area. Upstairs is my room, Hazel’s room and next to hers is your room.” Olivia smiled politely holding the door open to my room.
“Who’s Hazel?” I asked feeling a bit confused I had no idea who Hazel was unless she was mentioned and I was zoned out which oddly enough was pretty normal for me.
“Dear me, I completely forgot. Hazel is your cousin. She’s a year older than you but she’ll probably be in some of your classes she was held back in grade school.” Olivia opened my closet to reveal tons of really preppy girly clothes that didn’t seem to really fit as clothing- more like cloth that covers half of your goods.
“ Are these my new clothes?” I asked feeling extremely awkward.
“ It’s all of Hazel’s old clothes, wear whatever you like and toss what you don’t. I’ll take you to the mall come Saturday so you can pick up some of your own.”
Olivia turned around to do whatever it was she had to do. “ Thanks, Olivia.” I smiled wryly thinking it would be a little too weird to call her Aunt Olivia just yet.
“ Mom , who are you talking to?” The girl who clearly must have been Hazel stormed in and flipped her long blonde curly hair back as she stared at me with her hazel eyes.
“Hazel this is your cousin Faith, she’s going to be living with us.” Olivia hesitated for a second waiting for Hazel’s reaction almost frightened for a second.
“Awww how sweet. Well hi there Faith nice to meet you. I think we’re going to be great friends.” Hazel walked into my room as if she owned it and closed it as Olivia walked off feeling confident in this new beginning.
“Let’s get something straight right now. You stay out of my face and I won’t give you a hard time. At school you don’t talk to me or look at me - you are nonexistent.Remember that and things will run smoothly. Don’t touch my shit without asking and don’t you dare tell mum anything you see or hear at school.” Hazel glared at me threateningly as I let out a laugh.
“ Are you always this friendly?” I looked at her folding my arms not dare backing down.
“Hardly.” Hazel opened the door and went into her own room shutting her door behind her.
“Lovely, freaking lovely.” I shook my head as I took in the new room. It was bigger than my old bedroom, there were tons of bookshelves and a computer desk with a Dell laptop on it. The walls were light pink and there was a nice flat screen mounted on the wall across from my bed. The closet was actually a remote control spinning closet that alone was almost enough to cheer me up. On the nightstand I put my family’s picture, the pearl necklace, dad’s compass and on the bed next to my pillow is where I placed Summer’s stuffed bear.
It’s been a long day even though it couldn’t be past six in the evening I decided to turn in for the night tomorrow would be my first day at a new school in the middle of the semester on a Wednesday. Who started school midweek anyways? I guess if I had bothered to show up to class more often I’d be able to answer that. I pulled the blankets up tucking myself in and clung onto the stuffed bear before nuzzling my face into it remembering the smell of my old home and memories.
