It was the first time when Soule realised a beautiful piece was played by someone on the other side of the wall. He was always the only musician in the building, at least that was what he thought.
River Flows in You
A familiar yet beautiful and calming piece. Just like how the rain drops slowly knocked on the window from where he was staying in the second level of an apartment in the suburban.
A new neighbour? He thought.
Realising the existence of another person who also enjoys the same interest, Soule braved himself, who is a complete introvert who rarely initiate any form of human interaction, to leave a note in front of the stranger's door.
_______
Dear neighbour,
I am a stranger who lives in a unit right next to you.
I noticed that you played a piece that I also enjoy and that we might have the same interest.Would you be interested in a duet? I would play first, stop, and you may continue the piece.
p.s: in this almost empty building, in the middle of a lockdown, I'm delighted to encounter a friend :) we might be strangers, but thank you for being here and I am also here right next to you.
p.s.s: how does next Sunday at 2pm sounds?
_______The next Sunday came quicker than he expected, the oh-so-excited Soule was getting ready and did some light stretching before starting the piece.
The same piece he heard played by his neighbour last week.
River Flows In You
He started.
He played beautifully until he reached the end of the second bar. Then, he lifted his fingers off the piano keys. He's waiting, and waiting. Patiently.
Hoping the kind neighbour will continue the piece.
And he did.
Slowly, the continuation of music notes flowing out from where he left off.
Still as calming and as nostalgic. It brought him back to when he was a 5 years old boy running through his grandparents backyard trying to catch dragonflies. He still remembered the smile and adoration his grandma radiated as she magnificently moved her digits between the keys.
A smile creeped on his face.
He played!
He's here.
The 27 years old man continued the piece after the neighbour stopped. They played in turns until the whole piece was presented.
He's totally satisfied.
People can maybe tell from the way he was smiling all day that Sunday, looking forward to the next duet.
