My blue gaze scanned Centennial Field I still couldn't believe it, I was here at one of the biggest concerts in Atlantic Canada. Me; among a crowd of over twenty thousand people. Two words Salmon Festival. I looked down at my watch.
"Fifteen minutes till it starts." I told Kenny with a smile. We were lucky to get VIP as they sold out rather quick.
"I'm excited." The eighteen year old replied as a bottle of water met his lips. "So am I." I replied. The crowd screamed as Taylor Swift came out on the stage.
"Know I'm lying on the cold hard ground... Ohhhhh." I sang along, not caring that I was terrible.
"Maxine, today is the only day I'll put up with your dying cat sound of a singing voice." My boyfriend laughed.
"Fair." I laughed in reply. As the country singer said good night, the radio cut in over the speakers. People began to move about getting t-shirts, taking pictures and getting water as the UV index was above twenty five.
BANG!
I turned around to see what was going on. A woman screamed. Kenny looked me right in the eyes and with that glance I knew what was happening.
"We need to take cover. Now." He informed me, as the general ticket holders started to drop like birds hitting a window.
"Agreed." I nodded and followed my boyfriend, my hand squeezing his.
We found shelter in the first aid tent; and cuddled down by the corner. I jumped a little as a bullet ricochet off something metal, probably a fence.
"Well be fine Maxine." Kenny reassured me, holding me tighter. I smiled a little, I don't know what mental state I'd be in if he wasn't here. The shots and silencing screams came closer.
"I think I hear a cop car." My boyfriend whispered happily.
I grinned. "Maybe we'll get out of here alive after all."
About two dozen pairs of footsteps stormed the field, but the victim count kept increasing. A black glove stuck in through the tent door. Kenny looked at me and smiled; we were saved. The rest of the figure came through and held the gun at us; well at me. I buried my face in my boyfriends shoulder closed my eyes and waited for the crack.
"I'll always love you Maxine." Kenny said
"I will always love you too." I replied, my heart beating faster than it ever had before. I suddenly felt the cool grass against my arms.
BANG!
I sat up. 'Did Kenny shot?" I thought, but my boyfriend was unresponsive. I worked up the courage to look the figure in the eyes. "YOU SON OF A BITCH." I yelled, half crying. "YOU CAN SHOT ME NOW." I was still holding onto his body.
BANG!
"Am I dead?" I asked myself, but I quickly realized I was still in the first aid tent; the shooter unconscious on the ground, a bullet in the stomach and a chest still. A pair of policemen came in.
"YOU SHOULDNT HAVE KILLED THE SHOOTER." I screamed at the officers. "THE KILLLER SHOULD HAVE HAD TO ROT IN PRISON FOR THE REST OF ETERNITY."
"Miss.." One of them replied, coming to my side.
"DONT YOU 'MISS' ME MY..." I stopped yelling and broke into a sob. "Boyfriends dead."
The officer put his arm around me.
"He took it bullet for me you know." I sniffed as the shooters body was removed.
The sergeant nodded, still trying to comfort me.
After the shock settled a little, the paramedics put Kenny's body in a black bag. I ran at the ambulance.
"KENNY!"
One of the policemen held me back.
"He's my boyfriend." I cried, struggling against the stronger mans grip.
"He's dead." The policeman replied.
When the officer said that; it hit me like a slap in the face. Kenny was gone, and I'd have to continue living on without him by my side. That's what he'd want me to do right?
