Have you ever created a world? Maybe as a child when you were playing pretend with friends. Maybe you told a story so vivid it might as well have been real. A place all your own, that you could visit whenever you wished. That’s what I’ve done; I’ve created a world named Palaedom. A complete world, with countries and cities. With kings, knights, and thieves. It has flowing rivers and lush forests covering the vast landscape. Sharp mountains and ocean expanses drawing the horizon. The best part is that it’s all mine. I control the wars and elections. Every move a person makes is my decision. The peoples’ conversations are my scripts. I have ultimate control. To help inflate my ego, I even created my own religion. The people call me the Writer, the all powerful deity of this world. Now of course, not everyone believes I exist, I have to keep things realistic. But it doesn’t matter if they did, I’m still in charge, and I’m the one who ultimately decides if they believe or not. I am the master of everything.
I’ve been writing this story for years, sitting at my desk detailing the choices of the people. Typing up the adventures of heroes and the fates of villains. It’s been great being the Writer, but I’m bored. I always know how the story will end and when there will be conflicts and major plot points revealed.
If only there was a way to make it more exciting
I’ve been muddling this idea over for weeks, but I think I know what I’ll do. I’ve started inspiring my people with the idea of a chosen one. A single being who has free will. This individual will be able to make their own choices creating their own destiny. He could do anything! It will be so exciting, and I’m almost ready for his arrival.
I have chosen a knight; Sir Nathaniel is his name. He will be the one who is gifted with his own choice. He is no one too special. A warrior in training, a leader by birth, and dedicated to his home country of Glenwood by upbringing. He will make the perfect hero, as long as he makes the right choices. If he doesn’t, then that will be his own loss, and the story will still be interesting. Of course, I can always infiltrate his mind and give him suggestive ideas, just to keep things going the right way, but he doesn’t have to listen.
I decided to start him off on a quest, a standard kill-the-dragon adventure. That should be a good place to start. He will start in his home of Glenwood and ride into the neighboring kingdom of Thridley where the dragon has been destroying the innocent. It will give him a chance to be brave and noble. I will guide him and give him choices to make. A truly amazing story.
I have also been thinking about if Sir Nathaniel should know about me and my religion. This is what I’ve decided. He will be riding to his quest and come across an old man by the road. He will give the man a ride for a few miles. During their ride, the old man will tell him about my religion, of the Writer. Sir Nathaniel will be skeptical at first about the my existence, but whether he believes in me or not will be left up to him. His first choice.
Throughout the story, I will add or change things as I feel, it is my world after all. I can shorten travel for convenience, make things simpler or more complicated. Maybe I’ll add a love interest, or create political tension. Perhaps there is a conspiracy or a secret organization. To be completely honest, I’m open to most suggestions that Sir Nathaniel might present, as long as it’s interesting and I maintain control. Sir Nathaniel has creativity, I hope he uses it.
So here I am, at the brink of a new beginning, a new story, a new chapter one might say. The scene is set, the Kingdom of Glenwood in the world of Palaedom. The hero is chosen, Sir Nathaniel. Other than that, anything is possible, anything. So let’s begin the Knight’s Quest.
