THREE: BEFORE REBIRTH

Shen Yuan's back felt cold as she took a step back.

Yes.

She didn't know the identity of her master. She would have happily played with this bitch all for herself if the benefits were not too tempting!

Her master has always been mysterious. He always gave orders about Feng Zhi Lian. He told them a location and asked them to imprison her. After completing it, she and Xing Ming would receive supplies in return. But, aside from those supplies, it was the power he provided them that made them willingly bow to him.

Such power! Such connections! If not for him, even Xing Ming's status in the laboratory wouldn't have been stable!

She still couldn't comprehend why her master placed so much emphasis on Feng Zhi Lian. Since he was well-off even in the apocalypse, he should hold a high status on one of the five survival bases. Yet, whenever her master contacted her, it was concerning Feng Zhi Lian. After the discussion, he wouldn't even spare a minute to talk to them. Even though he held her captive and allowed them to experiment on her, he still restricted them to finish her off.

It was as though even in such a disgusting state, this slut still held significance over them.

'If she could ever get master's attention...' before she went out of line, she swiftly assembled her wandering heart. She has Xing Ming now, so no thoughts on another man.

Nevertheless, her heart was full of unwillingness. She subconsciously blamed this on Feng Zhi Lian. Maybe if this bitch died, he would notice her hard work instead. Reasoning like that, she felt better.

She wanted this bitch to experience the agony of suffering but not know the reason for it.

Just as she was about to speak, a slimy voice came from the door. "Don't strive to know too much. The one point you should know is that, now, you are going to die!"

Both shifted to glance at the intruder. There stood Xing Ming with his two attendants. He barged in and motioned for the two attendants behind her to chain her with the bed.

Shen Yuan, who had been talking viciously till now, suddenly turned docile, "Baby, are we finally going to finish her off?"

Xing Ming turned to Shen Yuan and then glanced at Feng Zhi Lian, his eyes filled with dismay, "Yes, master's orders. Otherwise, I'm truly reluctant to let her die so early! By squeezing her last drop of vitality, I can do at least a couple more transplant trials."

Shen Yuan panicked. She didn't like the vibes this bitch gives! Shen Yuan always felt that, even though they kept this bitch captive, the circumstance may turn upside down at any time. Coupled with the fact that Feng Zhi Lian often reminded her(SY) of the failure that she was before, Shen Yuan didn't want this bitch to live a single minute more!

She held Xing Ming's forearm and rubbed it against her bosom, speaking coquettishly, "Xing Ming, but we can't object to our master. You know the consequences we will face. Besides, there are still hundreds of test subjects. It's not like none of them will have good adaptability. Let's finish her off."

Feng Zhi Lian looked on coldly. Is she truly going to die like this?

Xing Ming stared at Shen Yuan and conjectured what she said as reasonable. So he promptly made a declaration.

"We will follow master's command. Before that, let all of us get out; our master wishes to converse with our special test subject here. After all, he is not so evil as to let her perish without giving any explanations." He placed a walkie-talkie on the bedside table and mocked, "Evidently, that is not satisfying at all."

Hearing his words, the attendants snickered and hurriedly went out. Shen Yuan, though hesitant, still followed Xing Ming out of the chamber.

The door was locked outside, and Feng Zhi Lian heard Xing Ming ordering the people around to enable the soundproof barrier.

As she watched all this, the two words rang in her brain.

Too mysterious.

The room was abruptly empty, and Feng Zhi Lian looked intently at the somewhat ancient walkie-talkie. These had been in use since nearly 16 decades ago. She had once heard that it would be tough to track down phone calls in old appliances.

Too cautious.

She waited for a few moments for the call to connect. She looked tolerant, but only she knew how restless she was inside. She was going to get some answers now, and maybe only she could bring the end to it. She did not want any catastrophe to befall her family.

Finally, it connected. Not long after, Feng Zhi Lian heard the voice that would finally answer her questions once and for all.

"Hello! Miss Feng, I hope you are enjoying your days of leisure!" a middle-aged man's voice boomed through the speaker. It was a manly and authoritative voice, but she could not help feel sick hearing it. She did not waste time and went straight to the point.

"Who are you?" she asked back.

She heard the person on the other side let out a throaty laugh.

"Whom am I? I don't know how to answer the question. Maybe you can take me as someone who has hostility towards your family? Or someone yearning to kill you all for decades? Or someone who just can't stand you people from the great families exploit your power on common people hypocritically? Anything that you feel put."

Sure enough! He knew of her identity.

She scoffed and spoke in a cold tone, "Exploiting the power? Hypocritical? Huh! If it was as you say so, then why would we hide from the command masses instead of basking in glory? Why would we help from the behinds and try not to disrupt the daily lives of the masses? You speak so self-righteously and selflessly, but why do I hear the insecurity and jealousy hidden in your tone? Don't try to agitate me by acting mysterious; it's pathetic."

The other side went silent for a moment, and then she heard the man sneer, "Good, Good, the Feng family raised such a good daughter! A pity you are going to see what pathetic truly means."

An ominous premonition enveloped her.

He laughed loudly, "You don't know what I am talking about, right? Look at the virtual screen in front of you."

Just then, she heard the opening music as the breaking news started to play. Such time coordination! It was as if he planned every second cautiously.

Too controlling.

She glanced at the screen with wheels turning in her mind, but the next second, it was as if her thoughts were stuck, and she couldn't think anymore.

On the screen were the pictures of her family. Precisely, it was the picture of their corpses. The news went on as the reporter spoke,

This morning, the survivors found four corpses at the outskirts of the D-Base. They seemed to have been killed by an attack in the throat. Their faces were smashed and were hopeless for identification. After further examination, forensics found through DNA examining that they were a family of four: parents and their two sons. Their cause of death is still unknown...

The others may not know, but she could identify them without fail.

Her family. They died. No point in living anymore.

She froze and couldn't stop the extreme pain from the heart. It was as if her heart had been gripped rigid. She couldn't even distinguish if it was because of a stroke or because she was mourning. She was trapped in a toxic daze.
