Warning- Transphobia Ahead. Proceed with Caution
"I can't do this," I mutter nervously to Dolores.
"Yes you can, Mateo. I believe in you," she encourages, "besides, you'll feel better after you do this."
"What if they don't even use it and don't support," I ramble, pacing around as the mist anxiously floats anything not bolted down.
"Mateo, I know most of them will. They will be really proud that you found yourself," she says, grabbing my arms and stopping me. "You can do this."
I take a deep breath in and breath out, gaining any confidence I can.
"Alright," I whisper and Dolores takes her hands off of my shoulders and pushes me towards the door.
I open it and give her a small smile before closing it and going towards the kitchen where I asked everyone to meet.
"Hey Maria!" Camilo calls as I enter and I have to refrain from flinching.
"What did you need to tell us Ria?" Tia Julieta asks.
"You guys should sit down for this," I say and they all hesitantly sit down. I take another deep breath and close my eyes, keeping my head down.
"I wanted to tell you, imnotagirlimaboyandIwanttogobymateowithhehimpronouns," I quickly rush out.
"I'm sorry what?" Camilo questions.
"I'm not a girl. I'm a boy. And I want to go by Mateo with he/him pronouns," I say slower, waiting for their reactions.
"Awesome!" I hear Camilo say rather loudly, jumping at me and hugging me tightly.
"Wait, you guys aren't mad?" I ask, opening my eyes and hugging Camilo back, watching a humongous rainbow stretch across the house.
"Why would we be mad?" Tia Pepa asks.
"It doesn't matter who you want to be or how you identity, you are you and we will accept you no matter what. Mateo," Isa says, pushing Milo away and hugging me herself.
"And that's on behalf of all of us," Tia Julieta adds with a warm smile.
"Wait, does this mean I got a half ish brother/cousin?" Mira asks with a gleam in her eyes. It's the first I've seen her excited since her ceremony.
"Yep!" I exclaim with the same energy.
I was nearly bouncing with joy with all the positive reactions and feed back.
"Good job, little bro," Luisa says, lifting me onto her shoulder.
"We can even cut your hair to a short haircut. Camilo and I can help you pick out clothes and I can help pick you a lovely girlfriend, or boyfriend, whichever you prefer," Isabela starts to list off but is cut off by an angry yell.
"No! Maria is not a boy and you will not be doing these things. She will stay who she is and we will find her a capable husband. She doesn't need to be even more of a disaster after her ceremony being a disaster!" Abuela shouts.
I frown and look down, ashamed, wanting to hop off of Luisa's shoulder and go back to my room but she keeps me up there with a tight grip on my leg.
The rainbow in the sky quickly turns to a thunder cloud.
"Mama," Tia Pepa warns furiously, "his name is now Mateo. He isn't a disaster and he can be whoever he feels he is."
"I agree with Pepa Mama. We can't change who he wants to be so the least we can do is support and uplift him," Tia Julieta agrees with a calmer tone.
