It was the next day. I was sitting next to dad at the table reading a magazine. Jack had invited me to play baseball with him and his family and I politely refused. I wanted to spend some time with dad which Jack completely understood.
“I have a date with Edward Cullen”
I looked up from the magazine. Dad looks like he’s having an aneurysm.
“He’s too old for you”
“We’re both juniors. I thought you liked the Cullens”
“And I thought you weren’t interested in any of the boys in town”
“Edward doesn’t live in town. And he’s right outside”
“Now?”
“He wants to meet you. Officially”
“Okay”
Dad cocks the rifle in mock-seriousness. I grinned to myself.
“Be nice, okay. He’s…important”
Dad made a halo sign above his head. Bella went to let Edward in. Dad looked at me.
“What’s with you and the Cullen’s?”
“Wish I knew myself, dad”
Bella and Edward came back inside.
“Chief Swan. I wanted to formally introduce myself. I’m Edward”
Edward extends his hand. Charlie takes it.
“Hi Edward”
“I won’t keep Bella out late tonight. We’re just going to go play baseball with my family”
“Bella’s going to play baseball?”
“Yes, sir, that’s the plan”
“Well, More power to you, I guess”
“She’ll be safe with me, sir, I promise”
Edward looked at me. “Jack wanted me tell you he says he misses you”
“Miss him too.”
Edward leaves but dad holds Bella back.
“You still got that pepper spray?”
“Yeah, dad”
Bella left then while I chuckled. Dad looked at me. “When am I going to meet Jack?”
“Soon, dad”
He nodded. He went back to his rifle and I went back to my magazine.

Dad and I were in the living room. We were watching TV.
“I said, leave me alone!”
I heard Bella shout. Dad and I sat up and looked at the door.
“Bella, don’t do this. Just think about it, please”
“Get out! It’s over!”
She slams the door.
“Bella? What happened?”
We followed her upstairs.
“I have to get out of this place. Out of Forks. I’m leaving. Now”
I saw Jack in my room. I went in my room and shut the door.
“What’s going on?”
