The bell from the front door of the building chimed in, indicating Lilly that she had customers to attend to. It was a slow late afternoon at her family's bakery, so she had decided to read her books until the clock hit seven and she could close for the day. She had not been expecting anyone to come in after five. After all, Tuesdays, and occasionally Wednesdays, where their slowest days at the shop.
"Hello! welcome to Olympians' bakery, how may I assist you today?" Lilly asked politely to the two guys in front of her. she wasn't a people person but she sure could fake it. That was one of her biggest talents.
While they scanned the menu, Lilly decided to study the two men in the other side of the counter. The one in front of her was slim and tall with tanned skin and very notable smile lines, while the guy standing behind him was pale and shorter from what she could see of him, trying to not make it creepy. She had to admit that both men where good looking, and they looked good in their black fitting dress suits with gold chains hanging from their shoulders. She thought the chains look quite peculiar but familiar. And that's when she noticed the royal insignia on the left side of each of their suit coat, which only meant that the two gentlemen standing in front of her worked for the alpha king and his castle.
Lilly didn't see nothing wrong with them being at her shop, she was actually proud that some of the kings more trusted men where shopping in her establishment. After all, she was the one that had baked all of the pastries for the day. But she found it strange that two royal workers were out in the city at this hour of the day. After all, the royal castle was about two or three hours away from the town. And in her twenty-five years of living, she had never seen any royal worker in town after 2:00 p.m.
After a few minutes of scanning the menu, the taller man looked at her and smiled, "For me, let me have two miniature Tres leche cake, one blueberry pie, two small carrot cakes, and one black coffee. Oh, and everything is going to be to go."
Lilly took his order without missing a beat, "sure thing. And what about you sir? Would you like to order anything?" she asked the man standing behind his friend. He was just a few centimetres shorter than the other one, but buffer and he had freckles in his face.
She was a strong lady but the man's intense stare wasn't sitting good with Lilly, "Just an ice latte for me please." he said in a low monotone voice that made her a little bit uneasy.
As professional as always, Lilly did not let her emotions show, "No problem. Your orders will be right out! You guys are welcome to take a seat while I prepare the coffees." the royal workers sat in the table closest to the door, which meant she was about a meter away from them.
Lilly had this feeling of her every move being observed, like if she was one of her mom's bugs under the microscope, so she tried working on their coffees as fast as she could without messing up so they could leave her store as soon as possible
She heard one of them sniffing the air, "She's human?" Lilly picked at them by the corner of her eyes to see who was whispering, "I thought the king said they weren't any in this part-"
"Orders ready!" Lilly exclaimed before their conversation could even start. She was feeling nervous and wanted them gone as soon as possible.
Being one of the only humans in a werewolf's dominated town was a sour subject to Lilly. Nobody wanted to associate with a weak creature, like the elders would say.
Her mom was a half nymph and half fae, while her father was half human and half werewolf. And Libelula Amphiro was born more human than her siblings. no one could understand it. The only thing she inherit from her father was his good hearing. No one in town knew about it except her family. and it wasn't like it would made a difference for her, the town people would still find a reason to avoid her like the plague.
Both of the men stood up. the short man, who she had nicknamed freckles, walked towards the door while the other one want walked up to the counter to pay.
Maybe freckles sense my discomfort for him, Lilly thought.
"How much would it be?" asked the thin man.
Lilly gave him a smile before replying, "Your total comes out to $20.85" He gave her a $20 dollar bill while he looked in his picket for change, "Oh, that's fine like that. Don't worry about it."
The man returned her smile, "You're a peach. Thank you so much." He got his bag and his drinks on a drink holder and made his way towards freckles who was waiting for him with an open door.
She checked her wall clock and noticed it was five passed seven, indicating it was time to close. Lilly waited until both men where outside to approach the front door to switch the open sign to the close one to indicate the bakery was closed for the day.
When Lilly was close to the door switching the signs, she was able to pick up a small piece of their conversation while they were getting on their vehicle, "We are so late, the king is going to kill us for your stupid sweet tooth." freckles complained to his partner.
Lilly couldn't hide her curiosity from her face while eavesdropping. I was correct, they do work for the king, she thought.
Now she was very curious to find out why two royal workers where in her town, so she decided to do her closing duties as fast as possible so she could go home and ask her parents about it. after all, her father was the beta of the pack, while the alpha was her uncle.
A few minutes had passed by while Lilly finished cleaning up the store and leaving everything ready for the next day. She was so immersed into finishing the counter that when she heard the sound of bell that belonged to the front door she jumped, "We are close for toda-" she stopped mid-sentence when she saw her who it was, "papa, you scared me."
The older man standing in front of her let out a soft chuckle, "I'm sorry mija, won't happen again." he said with a mischievous look, Lilly knew he was lying. He loved scaring his kids all the time.
Lilly greeted him and went to put her cleaning supplies away, she was done for the day, "So what brings you to this part of town old guy? Don't trust my closing abilities?" she teased.
"I just wanted to come get you; we are having dinner at your uncle's today." he confessed.
Now that sparked something on Lilly. They usually did dinner at her parents' house, and only when it was something important did the whole family meet at the alpha's house.
She was pretty sure this dinner had something to do with royals on the land, "Does this have something to do with royal workers in our land?"
her father gave her a questionable look, "How do you know about that?"
They both made their way out of the building. Lilly shrugged while locking up the bakery, "They stopped a while ago to buy some pastries." She confessed.
her father gave her a surprised look, "Well, let's just hope they love your pastries as much as we do," he said with joy. And he wasn't bluffing, Lilly had a great hand at anything that was sugary and sweet, "But yes, it does. We have some amazing news to share with the rest of the family."
Being mostly human in a wolves and magical world had her disadvantages for Lilly. Most people didn't want to associate with her, they saw her as an anomaly. Which meant she barely had any friends aside from her cousins and siblings, so she enjoyed a little bit of gossip. It made her feel like she belonged to the town, and her family knew it, "Can I have a preview of the news?"
her dark eyes filled with tears, it was a tricked she used with her parents to great effect.
Her father took a moment to think about it, "No se puede hacer trampa, Libelula. But let's just say, you will only have to come to bake tomorrow's goods for the day and then you are off for the rest of the day. Your brothers and I will take over the bakery."
She couldn't wait to get to her uncle's house, those two strangers had picked her interest.
