Prologue
New York Public Library, New York, New York
Georgie sighed, feeling the emanent pressure of the high end head librarian burning holes into her back. She lifted a finger to the spines of the tens of hundreds of copies of A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens that squeezed eachother into their spot on the shelves. She pulled one down, its binding close to falling apart in her hands and set it on the rolling cart she was using to transport injured literature.
She pushed the metal cart towards an old elevator that looked as if it would break down at any moment. On her first day as a book binder, another worker, Julie-Ann, had pulled the lever and she almost had a heart attack at the sound of the old grinding gears. It had been installed (from what she heard) in the 40s, and only had mantinence checks when it absolutely needed it.
Pulling the lever, she held on gently to the bars that were welded into the sides. Georgie felt the grind of the gears above her, and heard the screech of scratching metal below her. Her thoughts wandered to the book she was reading. Arri was her current favorite, about a woman who was left on her own, and was fighting her way through a mirrored world. There was nothing like a good, mind-bending adventure.
She looked at her watch. Her mom had gotten it for her, thinking Minnie Mouse was completely appropriate for an already socially awkward 16 year old. The minute hand (one of her arms) had just moved to the 1. She sighed. 8.05 A.M. meant she had 55 minutes till she had to run to school.
