The Beginning

I was strangled to the ground by my own mother. The people I call friends are on the point of death and it is all my fault. I am struggling to keep my vision clear. Noises of traffic and sirens flood my senses. No one can stop her. She is going to destroy the only place I have ever known. I try to cry out for mercy, but it is far too late. The woman who I spent years looking for, has gone insane.

"I thought I got rid of you 19 years ago."

*BAM*

19 years. That is all the time I had to live. I couldn't stop her.

*18 years prior*

As a baby, I never cried. I watched the world move around me. I am an orphan living in a Church. The sisters take care of me and always say I am their favorite. They say I am easy-going, so they don't pay attention to me.  New people would come and go, but I stayed. No one wanted anything to do with me, I became distant...blah blah... sad stuff.

The year I turned six was when a new girl showed up. I was never one to talk and play with the other kids, I was a loner. The girl was four months older than me. The sisters said that her parents abandoned her at a park. When police found them, they both were found dead in a car. I later found out that it was some type of drug that took their lives.

The sisters told me to play nice, but I don't know how to play nice.

The girl always sat with me during our mealtimes. She would try to talk to me, but I wouldn't talk back. She was so annoying. The girl finally stopped talking to me after a week of me ignoring her. I would only see her when it was time for bed.

It was getting colder, and food donations were coming in. It was beginning to rain white stuff, and the other kids were hooting and hollering about it being Christmas. I could not care less, I just wanted to stay in to be warm and dry.

"Hey, Elizabeth!"

I turned around. It was the girl that I was ignoring. I could not care to remember her name. She was wearing a thick coat, snow pants, and boots. I started wondering how she knew my name.

"Let's go make a snowman with the others, it should be lots of fun!"

I rolled my eyes because I was watching Barney and it is way too cold to be outside. The girl ran upstairs grabbed my jacket and took a pair of gloves from one of the sisters.

"You will need these! You don't wanna freeze to death!"

She was going to make me go, and it did not matter if I opposed it. I didn't say a word to her. I got my jacket on and followed her outside. I only enjoy spring, the flowers give me hope.

"Let me help you put those gloves on." A sister said. I have never seen her before. She had red hair and millions of freckles. I could not stop staring at her. The sister smiled and pushed me into the snow.

"Emily! Don't run around! You will slip and hurt yourself!" The sister next to me screamed. Just then I move my head and the girl who made me come outside slipped and hit her head on the concrete. Her forehead was bleeding and that worried the sisters.

"Lord have mercy on her soul, Sister Becky I need some help helping Emily up." One of the sisters was talking to the redhead. I watched Sister Becky pick up Emily, and completely fall on her behind 3 feet from the entrance of the church.

The church bells rang several times to tell everyone it was almost dinner time. I was the first one to go through that door. I ran upstairs to the bedroom and saw the girl. I felt worried for her.

"I hope you had lots of fun in the snow Ellie!" That was not my name, why is she calling me that? I glared at her, but I must have scared her. She turned white and apologized. I turned around and changed my clothes since my other clothes were damp.

"Girls! It's dinner time!"

I turned and looked at the girl. She looked like she trying to rest. I went downstairs to the dining hall and chose the spot closest to the fireplace. I was still freezing. We were having bean soup and cornbread. The food was not as yummy, but it did make my belly warm and full. I did not see the girl come down for dinner so I snuck to get a second serving of soup. I was not caught, I felt like a deviant.

I was sprinting upstairs so that I would not be caught bringing food into the bedroom. I see the girl, she was messing with her bandaid on her forehead. I put the food on her nightstand. She turned around and looked at me.

"Hey there, oh! You brought me dinner. Thank you." I knew if she didn't go down to get her portion she was not going to eat until the morning.

I sat on my bed looking at her. Emily had blonde hair, light green eyes, and some odd pointy ears.  She looked so happy when she was eating. It made me feel warm inside knowing that I did something good. She caught me looking, so I turned my head quickly and got an easy-to-read book from my nightstand.

"I think we are going to be the most bestest friends in the whole world." The girl said cheerfully.

"Bestest is not a word, Emily." She looked amazed.

"So you can speak! I was getting worried. And you remember my name!"

Emily told me to call her Em since we are now proclaimed 'Bestest friends,' and she asked if it was okay to keep calling me Ellie. I did not deny it. I was only a little bit happy that someone has figured out how to talk to me.

Emily talked my ear off for the rest of the night, she talked about her parents and how they took her to a toy store. The toy store seemed magical, I hope when I am older I would be able to go to such a place.
