A small house sits quietly by a lake. The water is still and the dark sky is strewn with wispy clouds. Slowly a cloud moves in front of the full moon giving the night an eerie effect. In that small moment figures hidden by the brief darkness slip up to the house. Suddenly the night is shattered by the sound of breaking glass. Upstairs the residents aren't cowering in their closets in fear. The children aren't screaming and crying. No, at the sound of breaking glass both parents silently awoke, as if they were waiting. A single flicker of fear passed between them then resolution. Silently they nod in agreement. The mother glides up the stairs to the attic. There she sits at a small writing desk. She then proceeds to write a brief but thorough letter.Walking to a small round window, she hears a little trill. She calls to the bird and the owl flies to her gloves hand. Securing the note to its foot, she lets it fly away. Downstairs the dark figures are searching the house.Turning over every piece of furniture. Suddenly they freeze and listen. One of the figures had given the signal that he had heard something. After listening for several minutes they get back to their silent search. Upstairs everything is still calm. After coming down from the attic the woman returned to her room to see her husband quietly packing a suitcase.his face was grim. Silently walking past him she started to gather supplies. They were already dressed. The man in white trousers and shirt and the woman in a simple dress of the same color. The couple maneuvered around each other with grace as if it was rehearsed. Finally the case was packed with clothes and weapons. The two walked over to a secluded corner of the room. There they saw their precious twins. Girl and boy, barely six months old, sleeping soundly they picked up the babies and the wife turned a spindle on the crib. Across the room a hidden door flew soundlessly open leading to a small secret room.Moments later the twins were still sleeping deeply in the now concealed room. Outside the parents look tearfully at each other knowing full well that they may not see each other or their children again. Together they pull their knives out from under the pillows. They were ready. Downstairs two of the dark figures stand guard at the staircase that lead from the upstairs rooms to the living area where the intruders were searching. Suddenly a commotion is heard. A small group of the men rush over to see what happened. The two guards lie dead the couple standing defiantly before them. One of the men gave a shout and the rest of the dark figures rushed in. The husband and wife look at each other. Then they lunge forward. They both knew it was hopeless but they must keep fighting. For the sake of their children's lives they must keep fighting. Outside a cloud moves in front of the full moon giving the night an eerie effect. A child's cry rings out in the night. Nathan and Rose Clarks are dead. The owl flies on still carrying its burden. The wind flutters the paper revealing the only written words: "They have come."
