In our city, the sky was always dark. The lights would flicker often. But we thought it was normal. Tap, tap, tap. A sound on the floor. In the first row was Scott McCall. He was resting his head on his hands, tapping his feet on the ground of the school. The person beside him was Stiles Stilinski, the person behind Stiles, was Kira Kitsune. She was whirling her black hair around her finger, tapping one foot onto the floor. She yawned every 5 minutes, the mayor was late. "Students, I've appreciated all your hard work over the years and this year. You were all amazing, you deserve this day." Mrs. Martin, their teacher continued her speech. She was the mother of Lydia Martin, and ginger haired girl who was truly popular. The door flew open as Mrs. Martin finished her speech. The mayor was finally here, instead he looked cranky, as if they were late. "Hello children of Ember. It is indeed, Assignment day. You've all worked hard to get here. Now, who will go first?" He pulled out a tiny bag, which had rips near the top and was a faded green. No one got up. After a few long moments, Rebekah Michaels, a brunette got up. "I will!" She exclaimed, walking to the front of the class. The mayor held the bag with one hand, putting his other behind his back. Rebekah reached into the bag, grabbing a thin piece of paper. She unfolded it and read; "Greenhouse Helper!" Rebekah went back to her seat, excitement flooding her face and body, but Kira didn't seem to be pleased. She did want to work with Elijah at the greenhouse, but Rebekah was his kin. She deserves to work with her father. "Any other volunteers?" The mayor raised an eyebrow, his wrinkles showed. "Me." A boy in the back corner stood up. His name was Wesley. He walked up to the front of the class. He looked embarrassed, he shivered as if he were presenting in front of the class. Wesley was fairly shy. He stuck his hand in the bag and quickly pulled out a paper. Wesley unfolded it and muttered his job. No one could hear. "Loud, please," The mayor rasped. "Storekeeper." Wesley read in a choked, embarrassed tone. "A valuable job." The mayor sniffled, about to sneeze. Wesley walked quickly back to his seat, relief in his sigh. "Any others?" The mayor paused for a moment, looking around. "Me," Stiles stood up, walking toward the mayor. He dipped his hand into the bag, taking out a small piece of paper. "Electrician's helper." He read out loud, perfectly. Scott put his hand over his mouth, a muffled scream reached Kira's earshot.
"Me." Scott got up impatiently, his hands curled into fists. He took out a paper, reading; "Messenger." As he immediately read that, he dashed the paper across the floor in anger. "Disgrace! How dare you do that! Every job is valuable." The mayor calmed down a bit. Kira felt terrible sickness cross over her. The jobs she wanted were taken! "We will prosper. If every job..is..done correctly, Ember..will...prosper." The mayor quoted quickly. "Ember is not prospering!" Scott got up, his hands clenched into fists, his veins sticking out of his wrist. "Is it not? I'm sorry but, who's the mayor?" The mayor's veins stuck out his neck, his throat looked as if he were gulping insults in to not yell much. "The blackouts! The blackouts! The shortages! We aren't prospering! We're gonna die soon!" Scott yelled worriedly but more with anger. "Messenger is a valuable job, young man. Please settle down, and sit. Or I will not hesitate to throw you into a prison room." The mayor's veins stuck out more. Finally, Scott calmed down, his face red. "I'll go next!" Kira jumped up, Scott has weird thoughts. She thought. She placed her hand into the bag, grabbing a paper. In perfect writing, she read; "Pipeworks Laborer" in a low choked voice. "Out loud, please." The mayor rasped. "Pipeworks Laborer." She yelled, her voice full of voice cracks. It was made obvious that she was disappointed.
Scott banged on his desk slightly.

After school, she walked out of the building, almost about to go cry somewhere in an alleyway. "Kira." Scott came from behind her. His thick black hair swished toward her. "Wanna trade? Stiles didn't want to. I was..gonna try to fix the generator. Pipeworks is the second best for that." Scott spoke. "Indeed, yes!" Her worries swiped away, noticing she'd get messenger. They both traded, and went their separate ways. Kira was running quickly to the shortest route she knew to get home to tell her news.
