Prolog
Twenty years after the war... "

Clay rushed down the hall as fast as he could. "Come on", Peril said, yanking Clay, the flames from her body were hot. But, Clay didn't mind. His fire-proof scales protected him from her hot fiery flames. "Ow" he yelped, "slow down!". "That hurts my leg", he warned. Clay had been limping ever since he got bitten by a dragonbite viper. Peril had used her fiery claws to burn all the snake's venom out of his bite. But, she had made two huge holes in his leg.
"But we have to hurry", Peril said anxiously. "The egg will hatch soon and we can't miss it." Clay limped as fast as he could trying to keep up with Peril. They lived in a small mountain by the mud kingdom where they would be safe from anything that would threaten their egg or them.
Clay rather liked the mountain. It was quite nice inside and there were tapestries hung from the walls, and a little bit of each tribe. In Clay's bedroom there was mud, mud, mud, mud. And a pile of mossy grass where he slept. In Peril's room was a fire built into the rock on the wall, with a raised stone platform covered in burnt moss. Along the corridor were the tapestries of Sunny and her mother in Thorn's stronghold and on the hot sand of the desert. On the right side of the corridor was a room that would make you feel like you were stepping into the rainforest again, with vines hung from the walls and leaves and flowers scattered across the ground. Maybe it was Clay's imagination, but it also smelled like the rainforest, which made him think of Glory.
Is she okay? How is she doing, ruling two tribes? The last time he saw her was a year ago when Peril and Clay left to live in the mountains. He had been working at Jade Mountain for the past nineteen year, and then they moved here so they could take care of their soon-to-be dragonet.
Clay had built this room special for Glory if she came to visit. Then again, Glory is really busy. Does she even remember that me and Peril had an egg? I hope she still remembers where we are. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if she didn't come and visit. And who knows where Tsunami is? She was always so brave. Clay thought with a little smile on his face. He remembered the day Riptide and her took off to explore Pyrrhia, leaving sunny incharge of jade mountain. Did they ever have eggs? Who knows? But there was no time to think about what his friends were doing. He and Peril  had to get to their egg before it hatched or Peril would never let him live it down.
Eventually, they came to a large stone door. Peril had her claws on fire and stuck one of her talons in a hole above the doorknob. Then Clay turned the doorknob and the door swung open. The room was quiet. There were beaded pictures of flames on the walls and a little mud pool on the left side of the room. In the middle, on a huge mound of leaves, grass, flowers and moss, was an egg the color of dragon's blood. But this egg had swirls of gold on it.
Peril let go of Clay's talon and rushed to the egg as it started to crack. Peril was about to touch the egg but then she just...stopped. "What's wrong?" Clay took a step closer to the egg. "My fire" Peril said sadly as her wings drooped "what if my fire kills it" she put her talons up to her chest. "But the egg is the color of dragon's blood" Clay said puzzledly, not certain why Peril was so worried. "It's half skywing," Peril said, starting to get a few tears in her eyes "we can't risk it!" She yield. "But Peril─" Clay started, she pushed past him, gave him one more look "I'm sorry!" peril whispered and she ran out the door.
"CRACK!!!!!!" Clay whirled around to see that a tiny talon had popped out of the egg. He rushed over to the egg "no, no, no!'' Clay said in a panicked voice, he tried placing the shattered piece of egg back where it was. "You can't hatch yet, stop hatching. I have to find Peril". The egg cracked again and a little head popped out of the egg, with it's eyes still closed. The baby dragon looked like a mudwing, with a square shaped snout like Clay's. The dragonet heaved itself out of the egg and stumbled in front of Clay "awwwwww" he said, he could feel his heart melting in love.
The tiny dragonet took a wobbly step towards Clay "ouf!" squeaked the dragonet, as she fell on her snout. Clay inspected his new daughter carefully, her scales were burgundy and her eyes were a shimmering gold like the swirls on her egg. Her scales felt almost soft in Clay's talons "I'm gonna name you Velvet'' Clay said sweetly lifting Velvet up to his face. "Awrck?" Velvet spread herself across Clay's snout and she looked at him with curious eyes, her gaze looked alot like Peril's. "Daddy?" Velvet said in a sweet voice. Clay let out a happy sigh and then put Velvet on his back and opened the door.
Velvet was inspecting Clay's scales as he walked down the corridor and stopped at another big door, but this one had a slot in the middle. Clay knocked softly on the door but there was no answer. So Clay opened the door into Peril's room. The window was open, it was already dark outside and the wind whistled through the trees from down below. On the pile of burnt moss was a note. Clay walked over to it and took the note off the moss:

"Dear Clay,

I am sorry I had to leave. But I think our dragonet will be safer if I'm not around where she would be able to touch me. I didn't want to leave you to raise our baby dragon alone but it is for the best for all of us. And now, I'm in a place where you won't be able to find me. Maybe when our dragonet is older I will come back.. Mention me often to the dragonet and tell them that I left to keep them safe. It's my fault that I put our dragonet at risk.. I should have thought of my fire before having that egg. I hope you chose a good name and that one day I will get to meet whoever he or she is.

Love, Peril"

Clay looked up from the note in shock, Velvet scrambled to Clay's ear and said in a quiet voice "where's mommy?" Clay looked at his daughter and tried to give her a smile, but his heart hurt too much... Peril was gone.
