It seemed like she was the only one who could see them.
The red strings, I mean. Tied around everyone's pinky finger was a single red string that was connected to another person. The red string of fate.
But, she preferred to call them Red Heartstrings, because only the person who you were tied to could pull at your heartstrings.
Everywhere she went, all she could see were the clumps of yarn, strewn across the floor. Some were even in obscure places such as chandeliers in the ceiling, or through someone's hair. At first, they bothered her. If she ran into one, facefirst, or tripped on one, surrounding audiences stared at the crazy scene in front of them as she swatted at them. To a stranger, it would seem that she was clumsy enough to trip on a flat surface.
But by now, she was used to it and dodged them with ease. It was a bit harder, though, when she was in school.
At age seventeen, she had seen many couples' hands linked together, but their strings not connected.
She hadn't bothered to try to lead them to their soul mates. Once, she had tried, and that ended up with people shunning her and calling her a freak.
But, she merely brushed them off and went off on her own way. The only thing was, she hadn't even thought about finding her own soulmate.
One thing she had noticed in her seventeen years of being alive, was that if you're close to your soulmate, the string shrinks as the distance to your soulmate shrinks.
And that's why she was so surprised to see her string magically shrinking one day.
