Her name was Rose, and her friends called her Rosie. Was, because she stopped going by that name at the age of thirteen. The girl was religious, so was teased for her decision to wait until marriage to sleep with anyone, and how she didn’t wear makeup like the other girls to look pretty. One Christmas, a classmate thought it’d be funny to use her name in the song “Santa Baby”. The rest of the year group quickly picked it up, and by the end of the week all she heard were taunts and people singing “Rosie Baby” at her. When the holidays finally finished, she thought she was free from it, but no. People she’d considered friends would run their hands suggestively up and down her arms as they hummed the tune, and in the PE changing rooms some would even go to the extent of dancing as they undressed, making her as uncomfortable as they could. Everyone found it hilarious; everyone, except Rose of course.
It lasted almost a year before she snapped.
The shy, mousy girl bought some bright red hair dye and a load of eyeliner. With some new found confidence, she got rid of the people in her life she didn’t need, and as for the people who remained, she asked them to call her Red.
Thus, Rosie Baby was no more. Had this never happened, perhaps things would’ve been different, but no one will ever know. All we can be sure of is of, is that her life was put into a whole new perspective…
