“Emma, what is, what’s the matter honey?” I looked up as I saw my mom run up to me, her hands running through my hair which used to calm me down. I looked up at her as she smiled a comforting smile.

“The Fighting System… I… It’s changing this year.”

“What do you mean…? How can it be changing this year? It’s been the same for the past 10 years.”

“Mom… This year… There making it be any past family AND friends… WE are going to be in it this year. All family and possible friends of any past year’s winners IS to be at the school whenever they happen. It won’t be every different school doing it, oh no. It’s going to be one BIG thing. They’re going to make it be one big assembly. That one was all dad’s idea, it wasn’t the actual principal. Did you know that dad isn’t going by the name of principal. He wants everyone to call him Mr. Chase. The only thing mom, the only thing that scares me… is that it means, you, Jordan, Garrett and Clara are to be there… and I just… I don’t know what to do. If I have to pick someone to win… out of my family and friends I just… I just… I’m scared and I don’t know what to do.” Emma said, as she focused more on her hands as she played with her fingers, looking at her nails as she realized she needed to repaint them. She looked up, as she saw her mom there, as she watched her take a deep breath, as she closed her eyes for a second.

“Emma, why don’t you go and do your homework. I need to make some phone calls…” I saw the face she gave me, she was scared, I could tell that she was trying to hide it, but I still saw it. I looked over at the family photo, the only one we have of all of us together. The one that made dad angry whenever he saw it, and I never knew why.
