Zoey narrates.

'Nathaniel broke up with me.' Zara says, softly, as a tear falls down her face. She wipes it, only to smear more mascara over her face, and then she wraps her hoodie more tightly around herself.

'Oh, honey no...' I reply, as she instantly runs over and wraps her arms around me, burying her head in my shoulder.

'I can't believe it...' She says, sobbing.

My baby girl is experiencing her first real heartbreak.

_____

'What happened?' I ask, as I hand her a box of tissues, and we cuddle up under the blanket in my bed.

'We got in this huge fight over going to different colleges and some other stuff too. And then he ended it. Just like that.' She says, crying some more.

I wrap my arms around her, stroking her forehead.

'Did he even care about me at all? He said he loved me. Was that a lie?' She asks, as I am left speechless.

'It doesn't matter if he didn't. I did. I loved him....love him.' She says, quietly.

'Look, Zara, I know that this hurts right now, but you have to believe me when I say that it will get better. It might not seem like that now, but it will. Guys will come and go. Maybe he just wasn't the one.' I say, kissing her forehead.

'I feel like my heart has just been shattered into pieces.' She says.

'What if I never find someone to love again?' She asks, sniffing.

'Sometimes you have to go through the heartbreak, to find your prince.' I say.

'And I know that you're heart is broken, but I promise, someone will come along and they will repair it without you even realising.' I add, as she nods very slightly.

Suddenly, AJ walks into the room.

'Hey mom, what do you think of....oh.' He says, looking at Zara, surprised.

'Should I come back later?' He asks.

'No, sit down here and talk to your sister.' I say, sternly, as he rolls his eyes, but obliges.

'What happened?' He asks, confused.

'Nathaniel and Zara broke up.' I say, as Zara starts to sob again.

'Oh, right.' AJ says, as I gesture him to say something else.

'Maybe you guys weren't meant for each other? And anyways, I never liked him.' AJ says.

'Yes you did. You literally befriended him before we got together?' Zara replies, as I also look at AJ confused.

'Whatever. What I mean is that you're too good of a girl to let a guy break your heart like that. You'll find someone better. He just wasn't worthy of you.' AJ says, as Zara smiles.

'Thanks. You're still a prick.' She says, as I roll my eyes.

'And like, you'll find your person. Just look at mom and dad.' AJ says, which makes me feel not only happy, but also proud that my kids look up to our relationship as a healthy example.

'See, you're already feeling better, right?' I say, as Zara nods.

'So you'll be fine to do your speech at your dad's work party tonight?' I ask, hopeful.

'I don't know, mom. I don't know if I can pretend to be happy when I'm really just so sad.' She says.

'You know how much this'll hurt him. You being sad and all.' AJ says.
