I click my pen in sync with the subtle tick of the clock, mounted on my office wall.

The silence of the room is filled with the clicking of said pen and ticking of said clock, it's almost frustrating, in a way,

Knock Knock Knock

I turn in my chair, now facing the chocolate oak door.

"Come in," I raise my voice.

"Mr. Maldonado, sir,"

I raise a brow at the familiar face. Jocelyn.

"How can I help you this evening, ma'am?" I adjust my seating position and straighten my posture.

As my client makes her way to the opposite side of my desk, I pull out a folder full of files managing her divorce.

"I know you're my lawyer, and not my therapist,"

I raise a brow.

"But I didn't know who to talk to, If now's a bad time I'm sure I can find somebody else, it's just that I don't have-"

"You're rambling again, Ms Hardstone."

"Right. Sorry," She softens.

"What's going on, you can talk to me," I slip the folder back into my drawer, seemingly this conversation isn't about the divorce.

"Daisy, she says Martin's been sending her texts to her iPad, describing how he'll win custody of her and she'll be his forever,"

"Now, now, Ms Hardstone, you and me both know that will not be happening. I'm the best lawyer in this country, I can assure you, I'm doing my best and putting in my all for you to win custody of young Daisy" I reassure.

She sighs,

"I don't know what I'd do without you, honestly, Mr. Maldonado, you're a true blessing.."

I reach for the tissue box on my desk, nudging it toward the vulnerable woman.

"Hey, it's my job, you can count on me, okay?"

"Thank you, Mr Maldonado"

If it weren't for the need of professionalism, I'd have my clients simply call me Alex, but alas, I cannot. It'd put a bad rep to my name. No lawyer has people refer to them as their first name, at least not in this company. We've got the best of the best.

Jocelyn's emotions had come at bay.

"I'll see myself out now, thank you again, for everything, Mr. Maldonado, you give me hope in this cruel world."

I smile, politely, as she exits my office, stress lifted.

I let out a thick sigh, pulling out my phone.

1 Missed call from Karl

I wonder what he's up to?

"Karl, hey! Sorry I missed your call, one of my clients payed me an unexpected visit,"

"Oh, sorry" His tone is dull, it's rather off-putting.

"I didn't realize," George continues.

"It's okay." I assure

"What are you up to tonight?"

I think for a moment,

"Nothing," I start.

"Would you, want to have dinner? My treat"

"That would be lovely," I can almost hear his grin through the phone,

I mimic him in an English accent,

"That would be lovely"

"You're an idiot," Karl scoffs, following with a chuckle

"I'll head home now and change, Wait outside for me?"

"Okay, I'll see you soon,"

I smile into my phone,

"Yeah, see you,"

George hangs up, but I don't remove my phone from my ear,

My grin beams brighter.

"I just asked him for dinner!,"

I exclaim, to no one in particular, just myself, really.
