01 → joyride

"hey, i'm outside. you ready?" louis said over the phone. "uh yeah, i'm coming." i said, quickly running down the stairs. "ok... hurry it's so cold." he whined. i chuckled at the sound of him shuddering through the phone. i grabbed my zip-up from the couch and bounded out the front door.

i was met with those same dark eyes. even though it was freezing out, i felt as though i could just melt at the sight of them.  "louis, you know you could've just waited in the car right?" i laughed, noticing him leaning against the door. "well, i guess could've... but i wanted to open the door for you." he responded, grasping the door handle and pulling it open. i glare at him. "ah, what a gentleman." i mocked with a grin. "oh get in."

"we haven't done this in so long." louis said closing his door. "i know. i missed this." i replied.

louis and i used to always just get in his car and drive and drive for hours when things like school, or family, or friends got stressful. it was such a therapeutic way to spend time. we haven't gotten to do this for a couple months though because of louis' rigor schedule. especially with the enola holmes premier coming so soon, so when he texted me tonight asking to join him, i accepted with zero hesitation.

"ready?" he asked plugging the aux into his phone. "yep. let's go." i said smiling big. he started driving down my street while using his other hand to type in a song. "ok. just give this song a chance." he said with a cheeky smile. "uhm.. ok."

"everybody wants to rule the world" by tears for fears starts to play over his speakers. i groaned over-dramatically. "come on... it's a good song." he said tilting his head in my direction. "i mean... yeah i guess. it's just overplayed that's all." i said shrugging. "true, but that doesn't change the fact it's a classic." he said matter-of-a-factly.

he merged on to the highway just as the second verse started playing.

🎵..it's my own design, it's my own remorse..🎵

i rolled down my window, and took down my ponytail letting the high winds run through my hair. i turned around, noticing no cars on the highway. i looked back at louis only to find him looking back at me. "do it" he said. he knew me better than anyone.

i situated myself and leaned back over the door letting my upper back relax on the window.

there was no way to describe how i felt in this moment. i didn't care that the wind was so cold it pierced my skin. it felt exhilarating. i let one hand get tangled my hair and grabbed louis' hand with my other. butterflies swarmed in my stomach as louis stared at me, obviously taking breaks to watch the road... louis started singing along with the song gradually getting louder. i let out a genuine, hearty laugh at his silly manner. he picked up my hand and kissed the back of it, right as the song came to a close.

"hey you wanna stop at that cafe?" he asked pointing over to a small empty coffee shop. i noticed small flowers and vines hanging from the overhead shade and dim light coming from inside.

"yeah!" i said cheerfully. he parked and we walked inside. the smell of fresh coffee and lavender hit me as we walked through the door. it was just as amazing on the inside as the outside.

we both ordered our drinks and pastries and then sat down. "you really didn't have to pay for me." i said guiltily. "i know, but i wanted to. it's no big deal" he said warmly, putting his credit card away.

we went on to talk about school and all the press he's having to do. it was just a much needed catch up date.

it was a perfect night.

"you ready to go?" he asked. "yeah, i'm choosing the song this time." i said grabbing his hand. "yeah, yeah." he said sarcastically. i looked up to see his lips turn up into a smile. i squeezed his hand and felt him put his arm around my waist.

i'm so lucky.
