She calmly looked down on her hands, covered in blood. In the reflection from the knife on the concrete, she saw all the bruises and her smile faded away. Without a word she picked up the small knife, while blood was dripping along her arm and put it in her pocket.
Her knees started to hurt from sitting on the hard ground. She wiped off the dirt on her hands on her jeans and got up. Her footsteps echoed in the tunnel as she was walking. Home.
She slammed the door open only to be welcomed by complete silence.
She stared into the empty apartment, searching for some kind of life. Somehow she saw the empty walls smile back at her.
Slowly the night arrived and she gladly accepted it's warmth and safety.
TWO MONTHS BEFORE
— Hey Sage come here!
She crawled over to the other side of the bed.
— What? Sage said through her smile.
— Give me the knife? Avery whispered with a grin.
Sage frowned but gave her the knife. Avery took the knife and quickly cut her hand, she groaned but then smiled at Sage.
— Your turn? Avery quietly asked.
Sage took the knife and cut her palm, she flinched and looked up at Avery.
— Now we shake hands, Avery said though her grin.
They shook hands and some blood dripped onto the bed.
— We will be friends forever, Sage said and then they both started laughing.
She felt an arm wrapped around her as she slowly woke up.
The lamp on her desk made the room bath in a orange light and she smiled as she carefully removed Averys arm.
She got up and snuck into the living room where her mom and stepdad laid asleep on the couch.
She looked into the mirror in the bathroom and saw how big she was smiling.
I am fucking happy, she thought as the orange sunset shined behind the gray buildings.
PRESENT
Sage looked up at the ceiling as the bright sunlight flooded the almost empty room. The knife on the floor reflected the light and made it bounce on the sage green walls.
Her mom always used to say that she knew her daughters name would be Sage. She said that it was such a life full color. She probably made a mistake naming me that, Sage thought as she made her way into the quiet kitchen.
She made breakfast and fished up the phone from her pocket. It was summer break, she saw people traveling and hanging out with friends, laughing. Sage sighed and turned it of.
The sun was shining bright and there was not a not a cloud in the sky.
A dog started barking at her as she felt the fresh morning breeze brush against her face. Sage walked slowly towards the small store and put her cold hands in the jean jackets pockets.
— Hey Lewi, Sage smiled at the store owner.
She picked out some things to eat while making small talk with the kind old man.
Sage could hear the loud bells from the old church ring as she was walking down town.
She tried to keep the incidents of last night away from her mind but they came crawling back at every chance they got.
She had kept them away for many hours now but with the aching pain in her arms they rushed back and almost knocked her over.
She had got to the towns park by now. She felt like her heart was going to jump out of her body and she almost lost all balance.
The world had brought Sage down to her knees and as everything was spinning around her.
She saw a figure approach her. She closed her eyes to try to calm herself down and started to slowly open her eyes.
