My heart accelerated the longer Loki didn't answer my question. It was irritating because it felt like he was withholding the answer to vex me. He remained silent as if he was calculating his next move. Loki blinked in confusion. "I'm sorry, what?"
"Are you in love with me?" I asked again, not breaking eye contact with him.
Loki snickered, moving away from me. From the face he was making, I knew it was the smirk that he always hid behind to make a joke out of something important. It was his way of trying to hide his true feelings. "Ravenna, I believe the stress of your role as Queen is taking a toll on you."
"Loki, answer the question."
He started to open the door, "I believe you should get some rest. I don't know where you got that idea from but-"
I used my power to shut the door and locked it. Loki turned around with his eyebrow quirked up from my surprising action. "Answer the question, Loki."
Loki retorted, "Ravenna, this is ridiculous. Where on earth did you get that idea from?"
"Why can't you answer a simple question?" I countered, stepping towards him. "If it's so ridiculous, then it shouldn't be so difficult. Instead, you choose to avoid it by asking other questions. Now, answer me. Are you in love with me, Loki? Yes or no?"
"Ravenna-"
I interjected harshly, "Yes or no?" Loki looked down, clenching his jaw. Softly, I asked him one last time, "Are you in love with me?"
"What difference will it make if I answer that, Ravenna?" He locked eyes with me. "If I answer your question, what will that do? What will it change?"
"Everything."
"Will it?" He challenged, stepping closer to me. His chest bumped against me, causing me to step back. "Would you cancel the engagement with Thor?"
Baffled, I took a step back. "What?"
"You heard me. If I told you that I was in love with you, that all I ever wanted was you. The thought of you living your days with Thor destroys my very soul. That the very sight of you hurts because of how badly I have yearned to be with you all these years. How I wished every day of my existence that I could have you as mine, to cherish and love you for the rest of my life." He expressed. "If I told you all of that, would you cancel your engagement with Thor?"
My throat felt dry and pained me when I swallowed. "It's not that simple."
Loki's jaw set to the side, scowling at me. "It's not that simple," he scoffed in a mocking tone. "Of course, it's not, Ravenna. Always like you to complicate things, isn't it?"
"It is complicated! Ever since we were young, I was arranged to marry Thor! All my life, I have been preparing for that day. I can't just end my engagement with Thor."
"Really?" Loki stepped toward me. "Then, why did a little birdie tell me how you had the power to end your engagement at any time during Thor's banishment?"
My eyes closed, swallowing down my anxiety. "My father told you?"
"What did you expect? His own daughter claims she is too busy to visit her family due to her temporary duties as Queen. It only makes sense for him to request council from the King. He told me about his concern for you, along with that little detail about your engagement. You have the power to cancel the engagement, but you choose not to."
"You don't understand. Every single person in Asgard wants me to be Queen. It's as if being queen is my birthright too. It's expected of me to be the future Queen of Asgard. It's expected of me to marry Thor and take the throne. You know that."
