Jean x Diluc. Genshin Impact AU.

It was late and the night was gloomy. It felt like the City of Freedom was under a coat of sadness that night.

Her shoulders were sore, her back was too tight from sitting up all day long and her wrists felt like they were about to fall apart into a tiny million pieces after the ton of letters and paperwork she did today. A tired sigh came out her mouth.
The stars kept dancing outside the window of the Grand Master's office, and those once bright blue eyes sparkled while she looked at them. There were dark clouds to be seen, a storm was approaching. She sighed, again, damned be the rain. The huge clock was ticking every second in the dense silence making her body feel heavier and filled with fatigue.

She just wanted to be home right now, sitting in front of the fire pit with a warm cup of hot chocolate on her hands. Jean closed her eyes and rubbed the bridge of her nose, a pinching headache was starting on the back of her head and she was sure it was gonna be a long one. Migraine, even, for today.
She kept all those negative thoughts on the back of her mind while she walked around the office picking things and putting them back on their place.

Three knocks on the big oak door called for her attention.

"It's open." she said and went back to what she was doing.

"It's late, why are you still here?" that voice couldn't go missing.

"Keaya, hello." Jean looked at him over her shoulder.

Kaeya entered the office and took a seat on one of the chairs in front of her desk. He grabbed Jean's pen and started scribbling on his hand, he couldn't say still.

"I was surprised when I was told the Acting Grand Master was still in her office."

"Work never stops."

"No, you never stop. This is not good for you" Kaeya was playing with his cryo vision between his fingers after putting the pen down.

Jean bit her lower lip to avoid a passionate response. "Says you..." she mumbled under her breath and put the last book on the empty spot in front of her.

"I am working a night shift, ma'am. I am allowed to be here" Kaeya giggled and stood up from his seat "you can go home now, everything will be okay."

Jean looked at him, almost expecting him to grow a second head. "What's going on? You never come here to check on me."

"The fire is waiting for you at home, Jean. Don't let it burn out." those were the last words of the Chivalry Captain before walking out the door.

And those words felt like if all the weight on her shoulders was just flicked away in a second. Her eyes widened and she looked over the calendar on her desk, there was a small red mark over today's date. How could she forget?

Kaeya was leaning on the wall and he couldn't help but smile when he saw Jean's office door open and she walked out the Favonius Headquarters just a minute after he had walked out the door.

It looked like getting home was gonna be a tough fight against all odds. It wasn't too long after she left her office that the rain started pouring so she had to take cover on an old shaft along the road.

She cursed at the sky, upset that she wasn't gonna make it home anytime soon. She left her office around 10:30 and the walk home would usually take her 15 minutes more or less.
Jean sighed and sat down next to the little campfire she made to keep herself a little warm, winter was around the corner and the strong wind coming from Dragonspine kept reminding everyone of it.
It wasn't too long before she heard a carriege pulled by horses coming on her direction. It was hard to pin point the noise direction in the heavy rain.
