Dear Young at Hearts,
You often ask us about our experiences regarding adulting. You wanted to know it so you can get advice on it. With that, we decided to do a music dissection blog. This song resonates so much with us that we hope it could be used as a means of advice to you. Here we go.
About the Song and The Band
You may know Tears for Fears as the band who popularized Shout, Head Over Heels, Mad World, and Juliane's personal favorite: Everybody Wants to Rule the World. (My personal favorite of them though is Sowing the Seeds of Love).
Tears for Fears consists mainly of two lads from Bath, England: Roland Orzabal (guitars, keyboards, vocals) and Curt Smith (bass, keyboards, vocals). Other former members include Manny Elias (drums, percussion) and Ian Stanley (keyboards, backing vocals). Orzabal and Smith founded the group together, having bouts that parted them in 1991 and they got back together in the 2000s and going strong until today.
The song Advice for the Young at Heart is created by the band Tears for Fears for their 1989 album The Seeds of Love. The album itself is one of their most expensive ones. It reportedly cost around One Million pounds sterling (1.4 Million dollars approx) in 1989. When you listen to the album, you can hear the worth of it. One of the musically diverse ones.
The song is written by Roland Orzabal and Nicky Holland. According to Roland, "The song expresses a desire to grow up and get things together - to let go of the past. I think it's just an awareness of getting older, that's what it stems from. And also an awareness that certain aspects of you aren't getting older."
The Lyrics and Our Analytical Advice
I and Mel stumbled upon this song on Spotify and we have associated this with our adult lives. As mentioned above, we correlate with its meaning.
People around us often ask us for advice for being an adult/how to survive it. Maybe they asked us due to our profession and status in life. One day, when we are thinking about our adult life, this song played on YouTube. We then realized, why not write a blog about this song that answers the question of many of our friends.
So our dear friends, get your headphones, listen with us. Play this song on YouTube, Spotify, iTunes, or your phone. Then read the lyrics below. And we will tell you our advice.

Advice for the young at heart
Soon we will be older
When we gonna make it work?
[Verse 1]
Too many people living in a secret world
While they play mothers and fathers
We play little boys and girls
When we gonna make it work?
I could be happy, I could be quite naive
It's only me and my shadows
Happy in our make-believe
Soon...
Juliane: Some of us already had a family when we entered our 20's. Some are just starting to build careers, and some are single.
