chapter four
save ourselves

After Ms. Park and Nayeon left last night, we never saw them again. After sulking in silence for a while, I fell asleep on Suhyeok's shoulder. The sounds of the crickets from outside lulled me to sleep, blocking out the sohnds of the zombies walking around in the field. The whole day left my body drained and my mind clouded. How did this even happen? Did all of this start with Hyeonju? She got driven away to the hospital so how did it spread in the school so quickly?

I wonder if anyone outside the school is still alive. Is it just us that's left?

It was barely even sunrise before I heard shuffling around the room, waking me up. Cheongsan, Onjo, and Namra were already awake before I was. I look up at Suhyeok, his eyes close and mouth slightly parted, still sleeping. His hair was messy and unkept, making me let out a light chuckle.

I was hoping I would wake up and be in my bedroom, telling me this was all a bad dream.

After staring out the window for a while, I could hear the buzzing of helicopter fill the silence in the room. "Are they here?" I ask in whisper, trying not to wake everyone else. Onjo just shakes her and watches by the window with Cheongsan behind her. "They've just been flying around the school all night," she replies sorrowfully.

"They'll come for us eventually though." Onjo adds. I feel Suhyeok stir from next me and everyone starts to wake up. The rays of sun slipping into the room signaling the new day. "How long do we wait around here?"

"Until they come," Onjo responds. "We don't even know if they're coming." One of our classmatss, Hyoryeong states, a small pout on her lips. "Even if they come, how will they find us if they don't know we're here." Jimin says, standing by the window. I nod my head in agreement, "Who knows when they'll find us. We don't have food or water. We won't make it if we just stay in here." I tell Onjo, finally sitting up.

"We can put a signal for help." Onjo speaks up, walking over to the table. "My dad taught me a signal, It was red and blue... to create some sort of pattern." Onjo speaks but her voice got quieter once she realized no one was understanding what she was saying. Onjo's father was a first responder.

"How about S.O.S?" I suggest, shrugging my shoulders. Everyone gives a slight nod in agreement. "Yeah, let's do that." Hyoryeong agrees, putting a hand on Onjo's shoulder. Jimin moves to sit down next to me, putting her head on my shoulder.

"We won't last long, three minutes no oxygen, three days of no water, three weeks of no food." Namra speaks up quietly, her hands clasped in front of her. "What?" Suhyeok looks up at her in confusion. "It's how long a person can survive without those things." Namra responds lowly. I sigh before whining and rubbing my eyes with my hands. "We're doomed."

"It's only been a day. We have to at least try." Onjo says to Namra, looking in her direction. "We'll be showing signs of dehydration soon. We won't be able to move by tomorrow." She states matter-of-factly to Onjo. I turn my head to her frowning. "Way to be optimistic," I state sarcastically. "What are you trying to say?" Onjo asks boldly.

"Are you saying we'll die anyways so we shouldn't bother trying?" Onjo adds, looking down at the table. "I... don't know." Namra finishes. I furrow my eyebrows in confusion and Jimin sighs from next to me. "Then don't say anything." Jimin says suddenly, picking up her head from my shoulder. Jimin was a very fiery spirit and Namra was irritating her with her negative speech.

I lightly nudge her on the arm for being so blunt. "Hey..." I whisper to her with a pout, "Be nice."

"I think prez is trying to say we should think about all of our options.... Right?" Suhyeok speaks up, trying to understand Namra. "No." Namra says softly and Suhyeok deflates.
