A Bump In The Road

Big Brother

I slam my alarm clock against the wall and fall back alseep, only to be woken up seconds later by someone shaking me roughly. I open my eyes angrily. "WHAT THE HE--"
"Hey lil' sis'!"
"Oh my god! Liam! When did you get back!?" I ask excitedly. I hug my older brother tightly.
"I got back this morning, I came here first to see the look on your face when you saw me" he tells me.
"It's so good to see you" I reply with a smile on my face.

Liam is my older brother who moved to Italy 2 years ago to stay with his girlfriend who he'll be getting married to shortly. They already have a 1 year old child, little girl, Hannah. I haven't seen Liam since he moved. I only ever phoned, FaceTimed, text or Facebooked with him.

"How's Mike been?" He asks.
"He's... better" I say slowly.
"What do you mean by better?"
"We still go to his therapist every week, but he's opening up a lot more"
"Is he still staying in the spare room?"
"Uhh... no, he sleeps in here now, dad said he could" I say to Liam.
"And mum?" He asks.
"It was her idea" I reply.
"Well... where is he?"
"He usually gets up for coffee in the morning" I tell him while getting up and pulling running shorts and a jumper on. I tie my shoe laces and put my hair in a pony tail. "Where are you off to?" Liam asks me.
"Oh I go running in the mornings and at night. I also started my swimming lessons again" I tell him.
"Really? That's awesome" he replies.
"Yea, well I better go, have fun with mum and dad" I say while grabbing my phone and headphones. I put on my favourite playlist and start my run.

"Riley! RILEY!" I hear someone yell my name. I slow to a jog, take out my headphones and turn around. I see Liam's fiancé, Spencer, and her daughter Hannah at the door. I smile and she waves me over. I put my headphones in my pocket. "Hey Riley, how you doin'?" She asks.
"Good, how are you?" I reply.
"Good, just trying to feed Hannah some breakfast. Out for a run?"
"Yea, I just saw Liam, so how long are you guys here for?" I ask.
"Umm... I'll wait for Liam to tell you, I'll see you soon yeah?"
"Oh, OK" I say with a smile and return to my jog. Just as I reach the woods my phone beeps. I stare at it confused.

~ (Unknown) Hey beautiful

I jog on the spot while trying to reply.

~ (Me) Who is this?

~ (Unknown) I can't tell you

~ (Me) Why not?

~ (Unknown) I just can't

~ (Me) OK, stop playing games, who is this?

~ (Unknown) Talk later gorgeous :)

I stare at my phone confused, but I don't get to think about it for long because Mike shows up beside me and hands me a hot chocolate. "With cream" he says with a smile.
"Thanks" I reply, taking the cup.
"Why aren't you running?" He asks.
"Huh?"
"You've been jogging on the spot for like 5 minutes" he points out.
"Oh, yeah some creepy person was texting me" I mutter.
"Do you know who it was?" He asks.
"No, but it doesn't matter. Guess who's back"
"Who?" He asks as we start walking.
"Liam" I tell him.
"Really?"
"Yea, he got back this morning, along with Spencer and Hannah"
"Wow, how long?"
"I don't know yet" I say.
"Well let's go find out" he exlaims. He grabs my hand and as he does I feel butterflies in my stomach. I ignore it and run along to my house with Mike. We crash inside laughing when we see Liam, Spencer, my mum and dad sitting in the living room smiling. "What's up" I say.
"Gas prices" my brother replies sarcastically.
"Shut up" I mutter. I shift my eyes to parents who can't stop smiling.
"Well?" I ask.
They look at Liam and Spencer.
"We're staying... permanently" Spencer says with a huge smile.
