"so, eh, yeah. i'll explain. while i check and see if i can get this place functioning again.. i don't think i absorbed all the c.o.r.e." Alphys jaw dropped. "Y-You did WHAT?!" Sans brushed past her. "don't worry, i'm still stable.. for now."
"How the HELL do you ABSORB the C.O.R.E!?" Undyne demanded. "believe me when i say i don't know. this is supposed to be impossible." Reluctantly the monsters followed Sans. "so i guess i'll start with the fact that i was born here, created by the previous royal scientist."
"CREATED..?" Sans gave Papyrus a nod. "i was supposed to be a weapon meant to break the barrier and all that jazz, but i failed. i'm a failed experiment." Alphys shivered. "B-because you couldn't break the barrier?"
"because of that and i acted against my creator to live a normal life. i didn't want to kill humans. but that's a story for another time. during my time in the lab, when i wasn't being experimented on, i was working as free child labor. it was actually pretty fun."
"Child labor- how young are we talking?" Undyne asked. "mm... i'm pretty sure i was five? six? somewhere around there. anyways he was working on the blueprints for something that would change how monsterkind lived... forever..."

🎇🎇🎇

"what's that?" A very young Sans pointed at the blueprints. "The future." Dr. Gaster replied. "but... i thought i was the future?" Sans asked, confused. "that i'm monsterkinds only hope?" Gaster paused his planning, looking to the boy. "Yes, that is true, but that may take a very long time, so we need a backup plan. Thus, this the Cycle Of Raw Energy. The C.O.R.E. This machine will make geothermal enery into raw magic to power the Underground." Gaster explained. "so... monsters can live here until i'm strong?" Sans asked. "Yes, yes indeed. I'm going to need that little brilliant mind of yours for this project, Sans. I need you to know it all so if there's ever a time that I'm not here, you can stop it, whatever it may be." Sans peered over the table, at Gaster's work, eyelights burning with determination. "i will do my best, doc!" Gaster hummed, curious. "I'm sure you will boy. I'm sure you will.." The determination was really affecting Sans, in a good way. It was a great sign.

🎇🎇🎇

"D-Determination..?" Alphys paled. "So how did this doctor whatever think you could save monsterkind at such a young age?" Undyne asked. "i was created from his matter and soul, i was highly intelligent for my age. don't forget, i just did save all of monsterkind." Sans replied as he looked to the melted console. "yep. that's not gonna work. i'll have to do it manually then. this way if you want me to continue."
"Oh hell yeah!" Undyne went after the smallest skeleton. Papyrus was still processing the first batch, there was more? Alphys reluctantly followed, feeling her sins crawling on her back.

🎇🎇🎇

Construction had started and a 10 year old Sans was supervising. "hey that don't go there." Sans stopped a worker from drilling down the wrong pipe. "What would you know? You're just a brat."
"i actually helped in the creation of these plans, thank you, and i know that that pipe is an attachment to one of the power generators, not the conversion unit." Sans pointed out. "ask the doc if you need proof, but i know what i'm doing. do you?" The worker glowered at the young scientist, but before an altercation could break out, Gaster walked over. "Is something wrong here?" Before the worker could get a word in, edge wise, Sans beat him to it. "this dumb dumb was about to place a power generator pipe down where a conversion pipe should go." Gaster looked to the pipe, than to the worker. "Sans, this man is not a dumb dumb." The worker looked smug. "He's a complete idiot."
"W-wha?"
"There are labels on the pipes for a reason. Since you are apparently illiterate, might I suggest returning to school and kindly getting out of my invention."
"i'm gonna put this where it belongs!" Sans magiced the pipe up, heading to the lower parts of the C.O.R.E.

🎇🎇🎇

"yeah... i was a rude little brat back then.." Sans laughed as they made it to the generator room of the facility. "whew, mostly untouched, that's good. course i can repair them, the the generators are huge, it would take forever.." Sans went to the control panel. "until i repair the window and console, i suggest staying out of that area of the c.o.r.e. i'm not sure what areas would be considered safe actually, so i'd just stay out of the c.o.r.e. period."
"I-I can't believe y-you helped b-build this place.."
"i can't believe i told you that i'm a nerd." Sans joked lightly.
