there are many different beliefs as to why performers say 'break a leg' rather than 'good luck'. one is rooted in superstition, claiming that saying 'good luck' would actually bring bad luck. so by saying 'break a leg', they would actually be wishing for the opposite to happen. instead of breaking a leg, they would put on a flawless performance. another reason is rooted in technicalities, claiming that actors who were not performing had to stay behind what is called a 'leg line', which meant they would not get paid. to 'break a leg' meant that they were crossing the leg line, wishing someone the opportunity to perform and get paid. but that's just two explanations. there are many others.
