Lan Zhan reassured his brother that he was alright, and extricated himself from his embrace as quickly as he could, eager to reach Wei Ying.
But when Wei Ying tried to stand up, his hands came away red, the ones resting on his thigh. He looked up in confusion, his red eyes returned to their normal silver, and they met golden ones, mirroring the same puzzlement. Too late, Wei Ying saw that the pool of blood he had been sitting in was partly his own.
Lan Zhan was by his side now and he recalled that when he had seen the beast for the first time, its fangs had already been dripping with blood...meaning it had already taken a bite or managed to attack Wei Ying in some way.
Wei Ying stumbled as he rose, and luckily, Lan Zhan was close enough to catch him. His vision blurred and the last words he heard, were, "I have you."
He closed his eyes.
*********
Lan Zhan flew on Bichen, carrying Wei Ying straight to the healers of Cloud Recesses. The Infirmary was prepared and spiritual energy was shared, hoping to activate Wei Ying's golden core. They managed to stabilise him, changing his robes into clean white ones as he lay still unconscious.
Lan Zhan refused to leave his side, a small part of him filled with joy....Wei Ying was here!
These words were like a litany in his head, on repeat. He sat on Wei Ying's bed, holding his hand and staring at that beautiful face, wishing he would wake up.
Thirteen years had passed since Lan Zhan had seen him, yet Wei Ying still looked the same, nothing had changed. His wide forehead was clear, relaxed without any worries while he slept, his high cheekbones dusted with the faintest traces of pink, and even when he was not awake, a slight smile played upon his lips.
He was so beautiful.
Lan Zhan was filled with a sort of calm impatience, a paradox of feelings. On the one hand his euphoria was lifting his happy mind to new heights, but now he also had to face the fact that he had fallen in love...with someone who had no idea of the depths of his feelings...with someone who may not feel the same way. Hence the impatience with which his thumb stroked along the ridge of the knuckles on the hand that lay in his.
He felt a warm hand on his shoulder and he forced his eyes to look from Wei Ying to the face of his brother.
"How is he?" XiChen asked him, his voice full of hope.
"Resting, Xiongzhang."
"There are still a few more hours until five. Why don't you return to the Jingshi? The healers will inform you when his condition improves."
"This one would prefer to wait here." Lan Zhan turned back to watch Wei Ying, as though his eyes were merely waiting for his permission to return to where they belonged.
Wei Ying was dreaming about something...his pupils were moving under his eyelids and Lan Zhan could only hope it was something pleasant. He could hear orders being given behind him and was surprised when he was asked to momentarily stand; the healers had pushed another bed close to this one and were gesturing for him to lie down. He did, all without letting go of the warm hand in his. But he refused to close his eyes.
He must have fallen asleep anyway, because the softest squeeze on his hand woke him up.
Silver starlight eyes were looking straight at him.
Lan Zhan sat up, a little disappointed in himself but those thoughts died under the weight of his joy. He almost trembled with excitement as he spoke.
"How does Wei Ying feel?"
