“Come on, love. You’re okay. You’re okay.”

Kit blinks, his vision blurry for a moment before he’s able to focus on you, hovering over him with concerned eyes. It takes him a moment to really understand that it’s you before him and not just a figment of his imagination. That the bed beneath him is actually his own and not some old, thin, dirty mattress. And the room he is isn’t the ones back at Briarcliff.

He watches you for a moment, his throat raw, his skin coated with a thing shine of sweat, as you tuck a few strands of hair behind your ear before your hand moves to his cheek. Your touch is gentle, the tips of your fingers brushing against his cheek softly as you frown at him. “Another nightmare?”

Kit nods, frowning, as his hand settles on your waist. “Did I wake you?”

You shrug; “it’s no worries.” Then, you pause, an expression Kit can’t really place clouding your eyes as you frown. For a moment, your eyes flicker downwards, your hand coming to rest comfortable on his chest, before you meet his eyes steadily once more. “You were screaming in your sleep again.”

Kit lets out a sigh, slipping his hand under your shirt, so his warm hand falls on the skin of your hip. “I’m sorry, darlin’. I don’t mean to.”

Your hands then move to cup Kit’s cheeks firmly, pulling his eyes steadily on your own as you shake your head. “I’m not upset cause you woke me up, Kit,” you whisper, your voice barely audible, wavering slightly as your eyes begin to water. Kit’s chest tightens at the sight of your tears, his lips curving downwards into a deep frown.

“What is it? What’s the matter?” He questions, his hand falling over your own.

“I’m upset because I wish I could make the nightmares go away. I wish I could take away everything they did to you back at that Godforsaken place.”

At that, a small smile curls onto Kit’s lips.

“You know you’re safe, right?” You question after a moment, causing Kit’s smile to falter at your words. “That they can never get you again. Never find you again. And that you’re safe here, with me. You… You know that right?”

Pressing his hand against his cheek, Kit nods without hesitation, without doubt, fully confident in his words. “Of course I do.”

Pressing your forehead against his own, you inhale deeply. “Promise?”

“I promise.”
