Separated but Connected

Training

It was a bright, beautiful day in the Kalos region, as Serena, Clemont, and Bonnie started getting lunch ready. Ash, however, had other plans.
He had been itching to do some after league training with Greninja. He specifically wanted to find out more about their unique power and what else they could do with it. Just yesterday they had learned that they could read each others thoughts and speak to each other through telepathy. Ash was itching to test it out again.
He quickly released the loyal frog out from his Poké Ball.
In a flash of blue, the Ninja Pokémon appeared, striking a battle pose. When he sensed that there wasn't any danger, he relaxed, but his gaze remained sharp.
"I was thinking we could do some more training with our form. What do you say?" Ash asked.
Greninja gave a curt nod. "Yes." He replied.
Ash smiled before releasing his other Pokémon: Talonflame, Hawlucha, and Noivern all greated him with invigorating cries.
"We're getting lunch ready, so why don't you go relax and have fun!" Ash told them.
All four nodded and ran in different directions.
Ash turned towards Pikachu. "Buddy, can you keep an eye on everyone till me and Greninja return? We'll just be in the woods close to camp."
He partner gave him a firm nod. "Count on me, Ash!"
With that taken care of, Ash and Greninja walked into the woods.
After a few moments, they stopped in a little clearing surround by trees. "This is perfect. Okay, let the training begin!"
"You got it, Ash!" Greninja replied, before the two of them tapped into their bond, and Greninja transformed.
In the back of Ash's mind, he felt Greninja's presence. It always happened whenever they activated their power. For the first couple of times, it felt strange, almost wrong. Now though? Now it felt right. Ash smiled whenever he felt the feeling.
Ash breathed a sigh before speaking. "Okay, let see if we can do it." He could feel Greninja's excitement and eagerness to make him proud. Then it happened. 'You got it, Ash!!'
Ash heard him!
He wasn't sure if Greninja heard him, so he tested it. 'It worked.'
A moment later, Greninja replied. 'It sure did.'
Ash smiled as he looked at the sky. The sun was out with not a cloud in the sky. He could make out a few Fletchling flying above him.
He noticed that the Water Shuriken on Greninja's back was shimmering in the sunlight, making it seem even more powerful than it already was.
Ash decided, then and there, that nothing could ruin this day, nothing.
Oh, how wrong he was.
