Draco's POV
The night everything changed took place in late October of my 5th year. As if the rain of Umbridge could get any worse, it did. I hated that woman, even before tonight, but my father said she was important and as a Malfoy, it is important to follow her rules and be on her good side, as the connection could be important to me in the future. Maybe a year ago, I would be following his wishes and hanging on to his every word like he was a wise man, but the second I saw that muscat at the beginning of the summer, all my respect for the man had gone down the drain. It's totally not about how he was a death eater, that didn't bother me as much as the fact that he was a part of killing Cedric. Not only was Cedric a pureblood, but he had no reason to be killed. He was completely innocent, and maybe after seeing all the "random deaths" over the summer, I realized that what was happening was wrong and I was not going to let my father drag me into this mess.
Later in the summer, I snuck out of the house and decided to try and see for myself if muggles were as bad as they were made out to be, and they were not. Well walking in a park in London, I met a boy. His name was River. River was a non-magical son of a witch who had died a few years back and a muggle man. One day when we were walking and I guess my wand had been sticking out of my pocket when out of nowhere, River says "you know, your wand looks a lot like my mother's". It was then that he explained to me that his mother was a witch so he grew up knowing about magic, but lived a mostly muggle lifestyle. This made things a lot easier for me as I didn't have to hide behind an excuse for why I didn't know what a "mall" or a "television" was. River and I spent nearly every day that summer together until he kissed me a few days before I left for school. I ran and haven't spoken to him since. I'm not gay. I can admit my views on blood status had changed but I was most definitely not gay. No, I just think about him at night with his bright blue eyes and sandy blond hair and the way he smiles when I find something new in the muggle world because we were friends, but that's not the point of this story I'm telling you. I'm supposed to be telling you about that night, and not that I don't hate muggles and might be gay. Back to the story.
So it was a Friday in late October and things were pretty ok, the fellow Slytherins never found out about the river or my change in views and everyone still treated me like a king. Right before dessert, the headmaster stood from his chair and cleared his throat, the room went silent. "It has come to my attention, that there has been a problem with our sorting hat" mummers had begun through the hall. I wonder what he means. The sorting hat has been used since nearly the opening of Hogwarts many centuries ago. Dumbledor continues "as I was saying, it has come to our attention that the sorting hat has been taking into account the student's wishes, instead of placing them where they really belong. So, after desert, your year will meet with an assigned member of staff in an assigned location, and one by one you will be brought to a room, and sorted from youngest to oldest, and once your sorting you will return to the great hall to receive further information. The 1st year will stay here in the great hall with professor McGonagle, the 2nd years will gather in the study lounges on the first floor with professor sprout, 3rd years will be in the second-floor study lounges with professor Umbridge, 4th years will be with professor Snape in the third floor lounge, 5th years will be in the library with Professor Flitwick, 6th years wi-. At that point, I kinda shut him out as I already knew where I would be going. At the time, the reporting didn't bother me much because I never even talked to the hat. The second it touched my head it made its decision. Malfoys are always in Slytherin. Pansy even likes to call me "The Slytherin Prince" but to be fair I think she just called me that to make me like her in some way, I don't know, but I wasn't really worried. Nothing was gonna change for him, maybe a few students would be moved but not anyone close to him. After eating some chocolate pudding and talking with the fellow Slytherins, we made our way up to the library.
