Meg

Jai exits my door.  I close it, sighing and leaning up against it.  He's very kind, very thoughtful and compassionate—nothing like what I would have believed he could really be like.  He's so different—so comforting.  I rest my forehead against the door breathing deeply.  I've never had a friend like this before.  The way I feel around him... it's like even when it feels like the walls are crashing down around me, he's there to pull me out and lead me to safety—Gale, too.  She's the same, the same kind of comfort but a little different—more Godly and less of something I can't quite put my finger on.
I take a moment to clear my head before I get ready for bed. I brush my teeth and put my pajamas on. I read my Bible study and jot a few notes down in my journal.
I pick up my phone and call my mom. She answers immediately.

"How are you doing today, honey?"

"I'm good actually. It was fun. We visited the hospital in the morning. The kids absolutely loved the toys. I prayed with a lot of other people and we spent most of that day at the beach."

"I'm so glad. You sound happy—happier than you've been in as long as I can remember."

"I am actually."

"Are you making any friends?"

"Yeah."

"Are you smiling?"

"I am. I've made lots of friends—a few close ones in particular."

"I'm so glad. You need some people to talk to, not that I don't mind you always coming to me but you need some social interaction with people closer to your own age."

I smile and tell her about my friends. I talk a bit about Gale and how she's been there for me. I mention Jai and say he's been a big help, too.
She hesitantly asks if Spencer has been calling me. I explain what happened and she's quiet for a moment.

"He sounds so... violent... much worse than I had originally thought when you showed up at our door again. Your father and I are grateful we found this out before the wedding. Your father... he's so disappointed. He thought he could trust Spencer with you. He's devastated that he gave his blessing to a man who's so unworthy of his precious little girl."

"Yeah. Gale said something like that, too."

"I like her. She's a very nice girl."

"Me, too."

"Tell me more about this Jai fellow. I don't think I know him."

"He met us here. He's just kind and friendly. He's going through something similar to me. We're just helping each other get through the pain, I guess."

"It's nice to have someone understand, especially if the pain is so new and fresh. That helps."

"Yeah."

"You sound tired. You should get some rest."

"Yeah, I definitely need some sleep for worship tomorrow."

"Are you leading?"

"They requested me to lead. They actually want me to sing here. Pastor Ben offered me a position leading full time at Riverview."

"What?"

"He and Pastor Gill have discussed it.  Alexandra may be leaving.  She's been offered a job at another church, probably a mega church or something.  They said it would be a paid position—a real job."

"That's incredible!  What a blessing and the timing is perfect.  Thank the Lord."

"Yeah."

"I'll let you get some sleep.  I'll talk to you tomorrow.  Good luck."
