"Mummy, this is all your fault!"
☆"Mummy can I have my blanket now?" Matty asks, with his mother huffing at the prospect of getting up once again, from only just getting herself comfortable.
'Seriously Matty. We won't be on the plane that long."
"Please Mummy, I want my blanket. I've been a good boy haven't I?" Matty insists. He had been a very good boy.
"Ok,ok." His mother rolls her eyes, getting up from her seat to reach for the overhanging lockers and is about to pull out Matty's case when an attendant taps her shoulder.
"Madam, May I ask you to be seated, we will soon be getting ready to take off."
"Oh I'm sorry, just a minute, I need to get something..." Matty's mother says, with the now pressing urgency to locate the blanket making her become all the more flustered. She unzips the case, still in the overhead hanger and plunges her hand in, feeling around for the infamous rag but only locating a sweater and a pair of pyjamas.
"Mummy, what's taking you so long?" Matty starts to fidget in his seat.
"Please madam, I must insist you sit down."
"Mummy, mummy!"
"Ok ok!...Matty you'll just have to wait." She slams the overhead locker closed and sits rather forcibly in her seat, with both Matty and the attendant feeling the lady's mini wrath.
The cabin goes quiet as the speakers above their heads go through the safety protocol. Now with belts buckled, the big ascent into the sky begins.
Matty squeezes tightly to his mother's hand. "Mummy I want blanket." Matty squeaks, his eyes screwed closed, his teeth clenched together.
"Here, have this." Matty opens his eyes to see a red sweet being held before him. He takes it and pops it into his mouth. "Don't crunch it, you need to suck it ok?"
Matty just nods, closing his eyes firmly once again. Then it happens, the plane lifts. Higher and higher. Matty glances to his left to see a wonky view of the world. He gazes in awe at how everything seems so small as they rise above.
The plane finally levels off and a "bo" sound can be heard indicating that they can undo their belts.
Matty once again looks up at his mother. "I know I know!" She gets up from her seat to once again find Matty's case to locate this blessed blanket. After a few attempts, Matty's mother decides to pull the case down. She opens the zip a little wider and begins to rummage....and rummage...and rummage.
"Shit." His mother utters under her breath.
"What is it Mummy? Why did you say a swear?" Matty leans forward a little more, watching as his mother now rather hastily pulls around the garments in her son's case.
"Uuhh...nothing Matty, nothing..." where is it?
"Mummy...where's my blanket?.....Mummy?...MUMMY!"
"IT'S NOT HERE MATTY...It...." His mother suddenly looks around, remembering she is on a plane with other people. She looks back at her son. "Matty...it's not in here."
"No Mummy. You said it would be safe in there. You said it would be safe!"
"Matty I don't understand. It should be in here."....unless..."
Matty's mother sighs heavily. "Sweetheart. I'm sorry. I think it got left behind.""No mummy it didn't." It's in my case. You said it would be safe." Matty insists.
"And it would have been sweetheart but that silly lady looked in your bag. She must have taken it out." Matty's mother looks at her son, only to see his face scrunch up into an ugly ball.
"Uuuh..Uuh uuuuuhh!"
"Matty, shh please." His mother sits back next to him, placing her arms around Matty's shoulders, pulling him in to comfort him.
"Mummy this is all your fault! Why did you make me put it away?"
His mother doesn't know what to say. This was a disaster. And it was soon to become worse...
"Ladies and gentlemen, we are experiencing some turbulence, please may you return to your seats and fasten your seatbelts."
"I WANT MY BLANKET!"
"Matty, I'll get you a new one when we get to Bobby's I promise." His mother replies. She knew it wouldn't wash but she didn't know what else to say.
There is a sudden jolt of the cabin, making everyone rock in their seats. Matty closes his eyes and repeats words round and round in his head...
...Blanket come back to me, I promise I'll never let you go again. Blanket come back to me, I promise I'll never let you go again!"..
The lights in the cabin suddenly go out, causing almost everyone to scream.
...Blanket come back to me, I promise I'll never let you go again. Blanket come back to me, I promise I'll never let you go again!"...
Matty concentrates on his words, meaning every single one. He wanted that blanket with him now! He would make that promise and stick by it.
The lights suddenly come back on, with echoes of relief flowing through the cabin.
Matty opens his eyes. His breathing still a little erratic, what with the situation they had all been in, plus his own personal crisis.
"Apologies ladies and gentlemen. We seem to now be out of the storm."
Matty's mother breathes out a sigh of relief, only half of her troubles were over.
"Excuse me Madam?"
She looks to her right to see an attendant by her side. She realises that she has left literally all of Matty's possessions spilling out of the case, still laying in the floor of the isle.
"Oh sorry." She exclaims, getting up to clear away the case and pop it back overhead.
It's now she sees it. There! Right in front of her, right before her eyes. That blessed blanket! She could have sworn that it wasn't there a moment ago. She had rifled through that case. "Matty. Look what I've found." She lifts up the brown material, waving it in front of her son's face.
"Mummy. You were teasing me all along! That's naughty." Matty says, almost snatching the blanket from his mother's grasp.
He hugs it close to his chest like a long lost friend.
"Blanket, I promise I'll never let you go again."
